Oh yeah and for the record

In high school, my grading scale was different:

95-100 A
85-94 B
70-84 C
60-69 D
59 Below F

So, when we had As…we really had As…

Sigh. I just have a real hard time wrapping my head around a 75 being a D. Am I being to unreasonable? Am I setting the bar too low?

  1. In the UK, a C was 50-60%, a B 61-75% and an A anything above that, so I was totally shocked when I realized that my little darlings, none of whom are particulary academic had to get around 70 just to get a C.
    I hear you about the boys-I know all the special ed people at three schools now-last time I went in for a meeting about boy 3 who was failing academically, they didn’t have to introduce me to anyone!
    BTW-boy 3 is doing better now after the school put him into a smaller core class and a curriculum assistance class where they basically monitor his organization, know when he has tests and homework due and give him the opportunity to ask questions in a less stressful environment. It means all the load doesn’t fall on us. It also meant he didn’t have to repeat the year.
    Find out if your school district offers any similar programs.

  2. No, Mel, you’re not being unreasonable.

    I can’t wrap my mind around 75 being a D. It boggles me.

    When I told my son your tale, his eyes bulged. OMG, he said, that’s a C.

    I’d send you Boy in a heartbeat if it would help your son.

    My family is hoping you find the key, the answers and we are proud of how you have stood beside your son.

    It’s not easy having a child who doesn’t always grasp a subject.

    You are a grand mom.

    May he find the way.

  3. thanks, you guys. I just feel so low right now, it’s hard to get out of the ditch. but I’ve made some calls and I’m going to make sure I get this ball rolling the right way. One way or another.

  4. Don’t even get me started. Grades never serve the students and they don’t serve learning OR education. They serve parents (the ones who are competative and want their kids to go to Harvard) and they serve the system. There’s no need for grades until late in middle school. Kids who learn without grades have less pressure on them to do things besides learn. Test taking is an art that doesn’t always have anything to do with what a person knows. Argh.

  5. Our grading scale in high school was (if I’m remembering it right) even less scaled.

    A = 95-100
    A-= 90-95
    B+= 87-89
    B = 84-86
    B-= 80-83
    C+= 77-79
    C = 74-76
    C-= 70-73
    D = 65-70
    F = Below 65

    If the teacher gave A+s (and we didn’t have many of those) it was usually just for 99% or 100%.

    The curve in law school was MUCH more generous. But even then, we were always envious of the folks at Yale, who had no grades at all…
