i can see clearly now.

Well, not really. But apparently if I live to be 300 years old, I might not have to wear glasses anymore.

I had my eyes checked yesterday and my sight has IMPROVED. Now, I’m not complaining–trust me. But it just seems strange.

Frankly, I can’t tell. I take off my glass and the world becomes an out of focus blur of shapes and colors. I can’t see anything unless it’s close enough to my face to touch my nose.

So, I’ll take any improvement I can get.

As much as I love the fashion statement a good pair of specks can make, I’m really considering Lasik surgery. Anyone out there have any words of wisdom when it comes to Lasik?

  1. My dad had Lasik and loves it. He feels that it significantly improved his quality of life. Of course, all I remember is the disgusting, milky white drops he had to put in his poor, red eyes for weeks after the surgery…*shudder* Catch me letting someone point a laser at my retinas!

  2. I had it done 5-1/2 years ago. They cut a nerve in your eye that keeps the eye from sending the message to the brain that it’s dry, so you don’t blink as much and it doesn’t get the moisture it needs – which is why you use the drops. In most cases that nerve repairs itself over time. Mine didn’t but even knowing that, I would have the surgery again because I went from legally blind to seeing 20/20.

The other thing (for me) related to the valium they give you to relax you. It hit me hard and without going into details, let’s just say that I have NO secrets from my opthamologist (sp?) – none whatsoever. :o)

  3. I thought about having it done… but didn’t. I had the initial appointments and everything. I ended up cancelling because something came up (a job in another city) but I’m glad now I didn’t do it.

My brother did and while he was 20/20 for about 5 years after… needs glasses again now at night and for driving… Also, he had a big problem with the dry eyes thing… but I’ve heard they’ve gotten better at preventing that.

For what it’s worth… I think your glasses are cute. But speaking as a totally blind person… I know what a pain glasses and contacts can be.

  4. My ex-manager had Lasik and he swore by it. But if you don’t go ahead, Maureen’s right–you look great with glasses. (Yeah, I know, not the same thing, but…)

  5. I actually love wearing glasses as an accessory, but I HATE that I can’t see anything when I wake up. Sigh.

I’m probably one of those folks who will get the surgery done and then still wear glasses. 🙂 I’ll just be able to afford them because I won’t have to get the super expensive lenses.

The jury’s still out on whether I’ll have the surgery or not. You guys have given some great tips and I appreciate it!
