Happy Valentine’s Day or whatever

funny pictures of cats with captions

This year, we’re ‘celebrating’ the day of love at Oaklawn. (Which, of course, makes Mel a happy girl) We’re doing this as a family, which is nice. I had to do a little bit of arm twisting to get Fishdog to reschedule soccer so that we could all go, but I guess my two weeks of, “That’s fine, y’all play soccer, I’ll be at the races. BY MYSELF. ALL ALONE. ON THE COMMERCIAL DAY OF LOVE.” finally worked. (sometimes the only offense is a good passive-aggressive defense. I’m not proud…)

We’re going with several other families that we enjoy hanging with. I’m really looking forward to it. I love the horse races, and I’m really can’t wait to spend the day with the boys. We just don’t do enough as a family. And now that soccer season is back in full swing, we’ll be doing a lot of dividing and conquering over the next few months. So this is our last chance.

If you celebrate V-Day, I hope you enjoy. If you don’t, then have a great Saturday.

Either way, enjoy this laugh out loud Mad TV V-Day skit. (if you’re viewing this from my Facebook notes page, you’ll have to click through to my website to actually view the video)

the races

It was a big day Friday. I won several races, but not like my friend DeeDee. she was up $500 by the end of the day. 2 longshos came in for her in a big way.

I almost considered not going but decided against it. I wouldn’t have written anything worthwhile–I would’ve just sat there, staring at my screen pouting because I wasn’t at the races.

Here are some more pics:

There’s always a cast of characters every year. This year, the pimp in the white fur was back, plus we me these lovely ladies. We see them every year, sporting a new hat…this year, we had to stop them.

This year, instead of meeting the obligatory drunk cowboy, we met a group of drunk Latinos. Who followed us everywhere the last half hour saying, “Picture, picture!” Finally we relented and they kept trying to kiss us.

The look on my face says it all…

Hope y’all had a great weekend. Did y’all do anything special this weekend (besides miss me, of course?)

weekend update

The races were a blast. More tomorrow. Here’s a little sneak peek though:

This is my favorite picture. Awesome.

Last night was supposed to be a low-key evening with two of my friends from college. Unfortunately, what it ended up being for me was a battle with bad shrimp. About 20 minutes after I started eating dinner, I knew something very bad was about to happen. Fishdog brought me home, and the war began. I’m much better today.

Hope y’all have had a great weekend. I’m writing, writing, writing today. Leave a message after the beep.

*beeeeeeeeeeeeeeep*

and they’re OFF!

Last year, there was much gnashing of teeth over photo finishes. I won one. Lost the others. Overall was win-win, but that had less to do with the money and more to do with the friends and the booze.

The horses are magnificent. When you go to the races, you should totally watch at least one actual race. And bet on a grey. Just because I said so. I also tend to bet on names. Despite some reports to the contrary, I am a girl. Sorry. I don’t have a penis, no matter how much I like to control the remote, hate bridal and wedding showers, and would rather wear a t-shirt and flip-flops over makeup and stilettos. (fuck stilettos. Totally created by men to torture women.)

Pimps and hos. Really, do I need to say anything else?

Every year has been a blast. This year, there are six of us, plus a driver. Yes, we’ve hired a driver. It’s really better that way. And we feel special when the car picks us up. This year, it’s a Navigator. Must be sure to wear my bling. As long as by bling I mean wool. Damn it’s cold today. 15 degrees right now. The high is only supposed to be 32. Brrrrrrr.

So while I’m playing with my friends, here’s a video on what true friendship is…watch it. Enjoy it. And tell me afterwards that you didn’t get a little tear. Go on. I dare ya.

messy

I’m kind of a mess right now.

Yesterday was a big bust as a writing day. No focus. My brain is in major meltdown mode. And with the Dreadline looming, I really can’t afford a nookular meltdown of the brain.

Today I have lunch plans with my old high school boyfriend. If I remember, I’ll get a pic and maybe I’ll even post some then and now pictures. Or not. We’ll see. I had a mullet back then. Not sure I’m feeling brave enough to prove it. Ahhh, 1984–how I miss thee.

One of my best friends from college is also in town this week. Plus I’m supposed to do my annual opening day at Oaklawn on Friday with the girls. I’ve set a writing goal to meet by Friday so I can go, so I better get busy. I haven’t missed opening day in 8 years or so? Can’t blow it this year.

I have no idea what my blogs will be like this week. Could be a plenty or my little website could resemble a ghost town. We’ll see. Got any topic ideas you wanna suggest? Who knows, maybe they’ll spark my thinking cap.

It’s Monday, so I’m also over at Fictionistas today. Pop by.

day 29 of my birthday month

Today is my second birthday of the month. (and it’s actually my dad’s and my niece’s REAL birthday. I’m so sweet, I don’t even mind sharing)

So for my 2nd birthday, we’re headed to the horse races at Oaklawn with a group of about 25 friends. It should be a great time and I even have a super cute new outfit to wear.

I’ll take lots of pictures. (some might be blurry…) and I’ll post them sometime tomorrow.

Today’s chatter topic: skinny jeans–should they have made a comeback or should they have stayed buried forever?

My opinion: buried. I can’t wear them, therefore they should not be allowed to exist.

The kids, my mom and I are headed to Mid America Museum today. Should be a good time.

Tomorrow is my annual birthday trip to Oaklawn. We have confirmed 25 friends will be joining us. I can’t wait. Love, love, love going to the horse races for my birthday celebration. Once we’re finished gambling, we head to our fave German restaurant, the Brau Haus, and eat and drink ourselves into a stupor.

Well, there will be decidedly less eating and drinking on my part since I’m in the middle of diet central. But I will be partaking some. 🙂

Have a good weekend y’all! Got any big plans?

birthday week!

Ian and I share a birthday week. My official birthday is the 14th; his is the 16th. I fully endorse the “Birthday Week” philosophy–though it’s not as much fun sharing the week, so I do my best to step out of his way on his actual birthday. Otherwise, it’s all about me.

This weekend turned out to be pretty awesome. By noon on Saturday, all evidence of the Blizzard had melted away. We took the boys to Oaklawn to watch the horses. Rader can pick a horse, let me tell you. I may take him with me every time. Actually, this morning he said “Hey Mom, can we go to the races Friday? I wanna win some money.”

Um. No. You have school. But I’ll let you pick the horses that morning before you leave and I’ll go to the races for you…

Mother of the year.

Yesterday it was 65 degrees. We finally figured out what was wrong with the vacuum (and by “we” I mean, Fishdog) and I went to town yesterday afternoon. Man, the animals have been shedding like crazy! I must’ve vacuumed up enough hair to knit an afghan. A big afghan. And matching socks. I’m almost afraid to head downstairs with the vacuum. We might blow it up. Do you think Dyson guarantees their vacuums if they explode?

So, what’s up for this week? And more importantly, what are you getting me for my birthday?

6 outta 7 ain’t bad

We had a pimpin’ good time at the races. Here, let me show you:
We see this dude every year and this year I finally got my picture with him. Oh yeah.

I’m pretty sure we accomplished 6 out of the 7 deadly sins…Wrath being the only sin left out in the rain. Sorry, Wrath. We were having too much fun. Maybe next time.

I won a couple of races, but I didn’t come away any richer. Sigh. One of these days…

We met our obligatory drunk cowboy.
Happens. Every. Year.
This year’s cowboy was great. His name was Tim and he works on an oil rig off the coast of South America somewhere and he told us that he would totally go up in space and drill into a meteor in order to save the earth. Bruce Willis just cowboyed up. LOL

Anyway, a good time was had by all. I’m ready to go back again…after I get over the sting of my empty pockets.

today is a day for sinning…

I’m guessing that today, my girlfriends and I will commit at least 6 of the 7 deadly sins. Maybe all 7. I know for certain we’ll hit lust, greed and gluttony. There’ll be some wrath, some envy, and some pride as well. Sloth will come about tonight, as we lounge in the hotel and relive our day of sin.

What’s going on? you ask.

Well, it’s opening day at Oaklawn! We’re taking our yearly jaunt to the horse races. That’s right: today is vajority day out.

It’s as cold as a witch’s titty in a brass bra here today–19 degrees as I’m typing this. Hopefully the sun will come out and cast its warming glow of approval on our day of sin. If not, we’ll just stay inside and drink tea. *snort*

Anyway, you bitches try to have fun without me. If you behave, I’ll even place a bet in your honor. If you don’t behave, I’ll be sure to spank you good and proper when I return. That means no parties. Undertood?

Ciao.
