tales from beaver lake

Yeah. That’s where I was last week. Beaver Lake. Seriously, how appropriate is it that we had a girls’ week at Beaver Lake? If I wrote that in a book, I’d have to change it cuz nobody would believe it possible.

This is the sight I had every morning from the back deck.

I would wake up about 7:30, sometimes slightly hung-over, with my coffee, my laptop, and my blackberry. I couldn’t quite give up all forms of outer communication…No real internet connection though, so I got loads of writing done. (notice the fishdog did NOT blog for me while I was away. Bad doggie. No bone for you)

The first night there, D and I shared a bottle (or two) of champagne. We toasted each other…and we toasted a bit of good (GREAT) news a friend of mine recently received. (a piece of news I’d love to cheer via the internets but am unable to do so at this time…stay tuned)

It didn’t take long for the first dragonfly to show up. My friend D was shocked the little dude was up around the cabin. She said they usually stay by the lake. I had to tell her he was there for me. They follow me. Louisa, Maria and Marley can tell you. It’s kinda weird. Even Deidre has seen it before. Dragonflies are my totem. If they search me out, does that make me some kind of Queen Dragonfly?
The dragonfly was the first of many critters I saw while hanging out at Beaver Lake. First there was the lake kitty who loved me. We call him smiley. We don’t like his “real” name. It’s stupid. Smiley fit. Smiley liked my lap. A lot.
And then we saw a snake…
and the next day, we saw him with his girlfriend having frenzied serpent sex. I ran in to get my camera and they took it under a rock. Guess they didn’t want their jungle love to be on the internets.

I also saw a bobcat and several deer. Again, I was without my camera. Of course, I see deer all the time, but I would’ve loved to have captured the pretty wild kitty on camera.

During the day, we’d go down to the dock and layout. We had intended to take the boat to the waterfalls, but it was so freaking windy, it wouldn’t have been very fun. So, we just enjoyed our books and the sun.

Oh. And I got to drive a mule, which was pretty much made of awesome.
And for the record, we honestly did NOT mean to spy on the naked people camping across the lake. It was a total accident.
tomorrow: BEAVER LAKE GHOST STORY…Stay tuned.

The Toe Report (like the Colbert Report only about the toe)

Today we are better. The swelling has really gone down…but the color is really ugly. Dr. Weed (the most awesome doc ever. I’ve known him since 7th grade, he RAWKS) said that Rader shouldn’t lose his toenail, but after looking at it this morning, I’m not so sure.

He might be able to wear shoes by the weekend. I guess since he can’t play basketball, this means we can go to the lake… LOL

The Mel Report
I’m having a hard time with this back to work thing. I haven’t written anything since I started the job. I haven’t exercised either. I can’t seem to work that stuff into the new schedule because when I get off work, I swear all I do is run the kids around. You would think that leaving work at 1:00 would give me plenty of time to workout, write, and clean my stinky house. But no. I leave at 1:00, run home, pick up Ian, run him somewhere. Come back, to the house, take Rader somewhere else. Buy groceries or run other important errands. Cook dinner. Bitch about the state of my house. Pick up the boys and collapse in the couch to watch one of the reality shows I’m obsessed with. (don’t judge me.)

I made progress last night by opening my latest proposal and reading through it. So maybe I’ll be able to find my groove again. I think part of the problem is the family has adjusted to me being around all the time whereas before, when I got off work and sat at the computer, they would leave me alone. Now…not so much. Plus, the kids have to be driven places here, not like in Oxford where I could just give them $20 and say “Go to the square.” Or I could kick them out and say, “Find some friends and go to the park. Come back before dark.” We do have a park within walking distance here, but their friends are spread out…so it’s like coordinating a military coup. I don’t really miss Oxford, but I miss some aspects of it…like the kid thing and my friends (Hey guys! I know you’re reading this!)

Speaking of friends:
Seven of us are going to see Sex and the City again tomorrow night. Jealous? You totally should be. I can’t wait to see it again!!!

more evidence

As evident by my headache yesterday morning, many of these were consumed.

as the night went on, we saw many more of these faces.

Ian spent a lot of time pretending he didn’t like the attention.

Rader ate up the attention
As did his daddy

and after a large round of drunk blogging

and boob action (proof Blake did get in on the action, despite his claims to the contrary)

a good time was had by all. Totally worth the slight headache. (Which was gone after 4 Advil and a big heaping mound of Mexican food.)

SEX and the CITY

It was like going home to old friends. I really think that overall, they did right by the series with this movie. I will see it again in the theater…possibly two more times.

Honestly, I loved it. I have one little nit that I won’t discuss here because frankly, I don’t wanna spoil it. Just know that even though it’s a 2 and a half hour movie, it’s worth every second. They didn’t rush the plot (for the most part) and they really gave each character her story. It was emotional and funny and heartbreaking and worth every second in the theater.
Go see it. You won’t be sorry. And if you can, go see it with friends.

Oh, and one more thing…I always wondered which character I was…I always identified a lot with Samantha–and I considered myself a toned down version of her…but last night, I realized, I’m Miranda. Sigh. I think I always knew that about myself, but didn’t wanna see it. LOL

Which character do you think you are most closely in-line with?

evidence of a wicked awesome time

The evening started off a little tame. Here I am getting my books signed by Marley. Aren’t we cute?

I finally met blog-friend Kwana.

Mel and Lulu

Marley and I cozied up for a while.
Then I cozied up to Maria.
Lulu and Elaine boogied.
Kristen, Lulu and Maria: probably talking about something naughty.

Kwana being her cute self.Maureen, Maria and Kristen. DEFINITELY talking about something naughty.
Marley and Diana Peterfreund.
Kristen, Fruit Loin and Louisa: Dirty Dancing 3: Boston Nights.

Who’s tits are these? (a game we often play here at Mel-O-Drama
Shoe Orgy
Told ya they were being dirty…
Further evidence of naughtiness
Kwana and Maureen. Not being naughty AT ALL.

This is how the group looked at 3:00 am
The “After” after party started out at an Irish Pub…where we saw this wicked awesome ass. Kristen and I called him over to the table to tell him he had a wicked awesome ass and to ask if we could see his abs. (Isn’t he just too damn cute?)
He obliged…but Kristen elbowed me so the piccie is blurry. Trust me when I tell you the abs matched the ass

Best part of Boston? When a 28 year old co-worker of Marley’s asked who that “hot blonde” was. Marley said, “Oh Kristen.” (naturally) and he said, “No. The one behind her. With the glasses.”

That would be ME.

Oh yeah. My life is complete. I can die happy.

More tomorrow….

last night

Much sinning occurred at the club called Saint. And dancing. Sinning and dancing.

Have pictures–some I can even show you.

We got back to our room around 3:00 a.m. Maria’s Loinfruit (Stephanie) and I ordered a pizza. Well, she ordered a pizza and french fries then yelled at the room-service guy when he said they don’t do fries that late. ‘WHAT? WHO DOESN’T DO FRIES FOR LATE NIGHT ROOM SERVICE?’ Um, well, the Lenox Room service, that’s who.

This morning we were up and at ’em early. I met fellow Fictionistas blogger, Chrissy. We had a lovely gossip over breakfast and coffee. Had the nicest time. Wish I could’ve spent more time with her, but Maria, Loinfruit, and I had a Duck Tour Appointment.

OMG. The Duck Tour. What a riot. Everyone should do a Duck Tour of Boston. Go. Now. Make a reservation.

I’ll post pics when I get home. Now I’m going to warm up and rest (it is as cold as a witch’s titty in a brass bra here today). We’re having dinner tonight and then I fly home tomorrow.

Boston is a beautiful town. It’s weird, I’m not really a “history” girl, but every time we pass a beautiful piece of architecture or something from the set of JOHN ADAMS I think, “Wow. History is here.”

It’s true.

BTW, I haven’t seen Matt Damon yet, but I promise, I’m looking.

have laptop, will travel

My flight leaves at 6:30 this morning, which means I had to wake up before the roosters. I am not a morning girl.

so I’m sitting in the Little Rock National Airport with my cuppa Joe and my trusty laptop, impatiently waiting. Boston is just a few hours away. This is my first trip to Beantown and my first book launch party. I’m taking notes so I’ll know what to do for mine next year.

I can’t wait to see all my friends. We’re gonna have a blast. I’ll take lotsa pics and try to post a couple of times while I’m there.

Meanwhile, don’t forget my LOLcats contest to win a copy of Gena Showlater’s NY Times Bestselling Book, The Darkest Night. (Congrats Gena. You deserve it!) and a copy of Marley Gibson’s (Kate Harmon) Zeta or Omega.

Also, for a fabulous interview with Miss Marley, head to Kwana’s blog!

a mel-o-dramatic mélange

So, where were we? Ah yes, yesterday’s list–updated

  1. Finish revising proposal, send to DK. check
  2. Start plotting new book idea. partially checked
  3. Clean off disgusting desk, partially checked. Finishing now.
  4. Hang anniversary present over desk.
  5. Vacuum and dust.

I could’ve told you yesterday that #5 would still be on the list. Guess what, it will probably still be on the list next week, too. Why hast thou forsaken me, Alice?

Next on my blog topic list? Today was weigh in day. I am officially down 11.5 lbs in 5 weeks. I’m pretty stoked. I worked hard this week, because Sunday we had a birthday party for my nephew and I accidentally ate chicken fingers, pizza, cake and ice cream. I made sure I busted my ass at the gym and walking. Plus all my yard work. I had to make up for all that accidental gorging.

I had hoped to be -15 for my trip to Boston next week, but I don’t think I’ll quite get there. I supposed I could do a Biggest Loser workout, and hit the gym twice a day, every day, for 4 hours or so. Heh. Who am I kidding. I’ll try to lose this week, maybe I can get to -13 before I head to Bean-town.

I really can’t wait to go. I’m gonna hang out with my friends and celebrate Marley Gibson’s (writing as Kate Harmon for this series) debut release! Beta Zeta or Omega? is available for pre-order now!

While in Boston, I’m going to get a chance to meet fellow TKA Sistah and blog-friend, Kwana Jackson! Yippee! I’m also gonna hang with my cps and BFFs, Louisa and Maria. And hot glamazon Kristen Painter. I mean, could my life be any better? I think not. Oh wait! There’s more! Marley and I share an agent, so yes, life could get better, because the lovely Deidre Knight will be there, too! Go ahead. You can be jealous. I’ll let ya.

Have I missed anyone? I’ll let you know when I return. With pictures.

Let’s see. What else did I want to talk about? Oh yeah. Top Shit Chef. Can I just say I’m disgusted that Jen went home? I really liked her. A lot. Sniff.

Okay, I think that’s it for today’s blog-o-plenty. Have y’all had a good week? Anything going on that I need to know about? And have y’all seen any cute shoes that are comfy that will go with my cute black dress? Let me know…

Oh and before I forget: Amanda has a fantastic post on Cyber-stalking/Cyber-bullying over at Fictionistas. Check it out. There are some CRAZIES out there!
