despite the odds

I’m in a great mood today, even though the odds were totally stacked against me.

Monday’s are always difficult at Chez Francis. I The boys don’t wanna get out of bed and once they’re actually upright, they never wanna get moving.

Today was greeted with an extra special batch of ARE YOU KIDDING ME when my almost 16 year old started harrassing my almost 12 year old for the 10 bucks he charged his brother to play with his Yu-Gi-Oh! cards. Seriously, d00d? You’re damn near 16. Stop being such a grade A butthead. You haven’t messed with those cards in 2 years and the only reason you’re being a tool about it now is because your little brother wants them.

Yes, I just called my kid a tool. Doesn’t mean I don’t love him, just means he’s a teenager and frankly, they’re all tools at one point or another.

Still, I feel great today. I’m in a good place mentally (though I’ve slacked off on my exercise lately and I’m starting to feel it) and even though Christmas really isn’t my favorite time of year (long story) I’m beginning to feel a slight tingle of holiday spirit. Not sure I’m tingly enough to listen to Christmas music, but maybe that’s not too far away.

I wrote a little bit this weekend on a new series proposal that I’m actually really excited about. Did some plotting with the Amazing Tia Maria last night and she helped me figure out why I was stuck. Now I can unstick myself and move forward.

We had another movie day yesterday. Watched The Proposal and Doubt. Completely different movies, but very good. I actually enjoyed The Proposal more than I thought I would, BUT they missed some really good opportunities to increase the sexual tension and the love story. However, I laughed out loud several times and got to look at Ryan Reynolds for two hours. All in all I would call it a WIN.

I’m ready to watch Love Actually which is one of my favorite movies of all time. And just because I’m in a great mood, I’m going to link my favorite scene from that movie.

“Enough. Enough now.”

what makes a great weekend…

Me and the #1 child (in birth order not preference) hanging all weekend, watching movies, football, and then going to see a friend play an acoustic show at a local dive where we also ate the best burger known to man. It’s true. Best. Burger. Ever.

Movies we watched:
The Day the Earth Stood Still: I’m a Keanu fan but I didn’t really think I would like this movie. I was pleasantly surprised.

National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation: It is so good to know that my 15 year old son truly appreciates the Griswalds as much as his momma does. We laughed so hard and spent the day quoting the movie.

Sixteen Candles: We love us some Farmer Ted. And Long Duck Dong. AUTOMOBIIIIIILE?

Obsessed: I love me some crazy bitches.

The Ugly Truth: There was a lot of funny to this movie and we laughed out loud quite often…BUT…can I just say the ending scene was the biggest, most ridiculous joke on the face of this earth? Seriously. Not even necessary. It irritated me so much that it almost ruined the rest of the movie for me. Good thing I have a very active imagination and had no problem rewriting the ending in my head…which was much more satisfying. And funny.

#1 child (in birth order not preference) and I also decorated. He put the tree together and helped me string lights outside. He also cleaned his bathroom for me like a good boy. And he did his homework. Maybe this week he can be my #1 child in preference, too.

I also baked some peppermint mocha brownies, hoping they would light up some holiday spirit in my cold, black heart. They were so tasty and smelled so good, I did feel a momentary flicker…

Oh, and the Florida Gators lost. Which means Karma has a sense of humor.

Did you have fun this weekend? Do tell…

john cusack marathon

So this feeling lousy thing comes with benefits. I found a movie channel yesterday that was running non-stop John Cusack movies.

Le Sigh.

My heart; she was happy.

Would you believe I never saw Say Anything until last night? Yup. It’s true. I always knew the line “I gave her my heart; she gave me a pen.” was from that movie, but I never got it. And then I saw it last night and totally got it.

I also watched One Crazy Summer w/ Cusack and Demi Moore. It was always a fave of mine, but it doesn’t even remotely hold a candle to my very favorite Cusack movie of all time.

Better Off Dead

I never get tired of spouting “I want my $2.” just to see who gets it.

I’m feeling a little better today, still kinda weak and stuffy. Would like to stay in bed with John Cusack for another day, but it’s not gonna happen. I have to earn my $2.

Raise your hand if you did NOT see New Moon this weekend?

I admit it. I’m one of the 3 people on earth who did not go to see NEW MOON this weekend. Yes, I realize Taylor Lautner is hot…but seriously, unless they’ve completely rewritten the movie to make it THE NO WHINY VERSION OF NEW MOON, I have no intention of seeing it. None. That book drove me stark-raving mad. Kinda like the whiny Harry Potter book. Funny thing is…the whiny Harry Potter book made a great movie…because they made Harry not so damn whiny.

And even though I firmly stand on Team Sparkle, I will freely admit if the Jacob character would just STFU for a few minutes and quit mooning over whiny Bella, I could totally switch to Team Wolfenstein because WHOA AND DAMN that boy his hot.

Even though I didn’t go see NEW MOONING OVER BELLA MOON, I did still go to the movies. I saw THE BLIND SIDE which was an amazing film and honestly, if the whole cast doesn’t walk away with an Oscar, then life is totally unfair. Go see this movie. It was absolutely fantastic.

Now for some TWILIGHT fun:

Totally ripped this off SciFiGuy and I’m not ashamed to admit it. If you’re reading this on Facebook, go to my website to view the video. Worth it.

How Twilight should have ended:

Bueller, Bueller

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off is a great movie from my teenage time (notice how deftly I avoided any reference to the exact number of years we’re talking about?) and now an important monument from that movie is on the market (Ferrari not included)

That’s right: Cameron’s house is for sale. Who wants to buy it for me? It’s only $2.3M which is a veritable bargain for this one of a kind structure.

If you haven’t seen FBDO, then open a new tab on your browser and immediately put it in your Netflix Queue. Yes…even you young whipper-snappers will love this movie. Go on. Do it. you won’t regret it.

movie moments

Can movie moments happen in real life?

You know, like when Mark Darcy marches out of Bridget’s apartment and she thinks things are over…that he’s totally pissed because he saw her journal, but really all he’s doing is buying her a new one for a fresh start? And of course, she runs after him, (in her underwear in the snow) desperate to stop him, desperate to explain…but there’s no explanation necessary. And then they kiss. and Wow what a kiss.

Or when Johnny shows up at the final show after being fired, walks over to Baby’s table and admonishes the dad, “Nobody puts baby in a corner.” And then they dance and everyone knows it’s true love.

Or like in What Happens in Vegas when they get the divorce and he knows it was the wrong thing, he figures out where she is and goes after her and asks her if she would like to be married to him again. On one knee, on the beach with a lighthouse in the background…man what a moment.

Or this famous Crash Davis speech that makes every woman I know swoon:

Well, I believe in the soul, the cock, the pussy, the small of a woman’s back, the hanging curve ball, high fiber, good scotch, that the novels of Susan Sontag are self-indulgent, overrated crap. I believe Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone. I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing Astroturf and the designated hitter. I believe in the sweet spot, soft-core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve and I believe in long, slow, deep, soft, wet kisses that last three days.

We all love a good movie moment, but do they happen in real life? We daydream about the person of our dreams surprising us in a way that will make us melt, but how often does that really happen? Is it realistic to believe in real life movie moments? Have you ever had one?

And what are some of your fave movie moments?

Armageddon it

No, this is not about Def Leppard.

This is about Liv Tyler and how absolutely effing beautiful she is. She has the prettiest eyes on earth. Honestly. How could you look at her and say otherwise?

She’s one of the dream team of women for me. If I could pick bits and pieces from different women to make myself more awesomer than I already am, she would be lips and eyes.

(FWIW, Madonna would be back; Beyonce would be ass, Gwen Stefani would be attitude and waist…)

Anyway, tonight, I’m watching Armageddon. I was in the mood for pretty people, a love story, some action and a good cry.

Enter Armageddon.

While watching, I renewed my love for Aerosmith. Yes, I’m an 80s girl and I will always love them. But this song, it just gets me. And I had forgotten how it got to me. It’s a great song. And I still want to be Liv Tyler beautiful.

2 things

  1. Go to Fictionistas for pictures of my adventures in getting to the STAIND concert. Totally worth it. It was a hot mess Saturday full of drama but the end result was awesome.
  2. Go see Star Trek. If you can, go see it in IMAX. Best movie I’ve seen in forever. Amazing. Worth a full price ticket even–and I never say that. Ever.

*really big yawn*

First of all, it’s Monday, so as usual, I’m over at Fictionistas talking about cleaning off my desk this weekend. With pictures. (No…not the French Maid pictures. Those I’m saving for a very special occasion. Sorry…)

This was such a good, low key weekend. Rader had soccer on Saturday, which was slightly miserable. Being naked and covered in BBQ sauce standing in front of a group of hungry cannibals would’ve been only slightly worse. (see? silver lining) It was cold, rainy, and windy. But a trip to Beef O’Brady’s for lunch and a nice Guinness and bowl of potato soup warmed me right up.

And so did the Guinness induced nap Saturday afternoon.

I caught up on some Tivo’d shows, did some cleaning, and hung out with the kids. Yesterday afternoon, while Fishdog was at his soccer game and the boys were downstairs, I decided to watch a movie. You know, one of those romantic ones that I have to watch alone because noboy here in the house of penis will watch it with me?

I picked the wrong movie. Sigh.

I don’t like Nicholas Sparks novels. I take that back, I like 1 Sparks novel…The Rescue. It was the only one that ended with an acceptable HEA. The rest are tragic endings, the hero and heroine are inches away from getting their Happily Ever After and Sparks reaches down and yanks the rug out from under them.

Having said that, I really like a couple of the movies based on Sparks’ novels. I love The Notebook. (HATED THE BOOK WITH A PASSION. Threw it against the wall when I was finished) Even as tragic as it is, I love watching Message in a Bottle because the love story is strong. (as an aside I couldn’t stand A Walk to Remember in either book or movie form. Another wallbanger)

Since I’m a Diane Lane and Richard Gere fan and since I’m a sucker for anything on a beach (except for that awful movie Beaches) I wrestled with my love/hate relationship with Sparks and watched Nights in Rondanthe.

Ugh.

I didn’t buy the love story over all. Maybe I wasn’t feeling the lurve yesterday, I dunno. Usually I’m a sucker for all that love stuff, but yesterday I was a tough critc. By the time I started to actually root for the two of them, Sparks yanked the rug out.

Seriously, it wasn’t even unexpected. Which just made me even more mad at myself for watching it. All I wanted was a little love-feel good and all I got was sour grapes.

I hate it when that happens.

Did y’all do anything fun this weekend? Watch any good movies that you can recommend?
