weird and random miscellaneous

My 11 year old’s favorite word right now is facetious.

My 15 year old’s favorite word is some incomprehensible grunt/noise thing that has several different meanings. The three I’ve been able to interpret so far are: No, I’m hungry, and Get out.

I woke up this morning with the song WILD WOMEN DO in my head. I don’t know when the last time I heard that song was, and I’m not really sure what the Universe is trying to tell me, but whatever. I’m just gonna sit back and sing it all day.

BECAUSE I CAN’T GET IT OUT OF MY HEAD NO MATTER HOW HARD I TRY.

I figure if I’m suffering, so should you. You’re welcome.

mish and mash

This will just be a mishmash of news, updates, and whatever else I decide to tell y’all.

For the Mish part:

BITE ME! has gone into a 3rd printing….just a month into its release! I’m totally stoked about this. Now, has everyone out there bought their minimum of two copies yet? Remember, it’s a rule:

Her debut novel titled Bite Me! is scheduled to hit the shelves Fall 2009 on the shelves now and she totally expects everyone who has met her, talked to her, emailed her, or uttered her name to buy at least two copies.

LOVE SUCKS! has an official release date….July 27, 2010! (almost exactly a year to the date from BITE ME!) I should also have a cover soon, which I’m very excited about.

I started working on 2 new projects this week and I have a 3rd project waiting in the wings. It feels really good to be working on something new again!

And now for Mash (not to be confused for M*A*S*H):

Rader (not to be confused for RadAr from M*A*S*H not Mash) has joined the chess club. He came home last week and informed me he was either going to try out for Archery or Chess…and Chess won the battle.

Ian has already had a ‘bad’ haircut, which was actually a great haircut but he said it was too ‘Emo’ (not to be confused with Emo Phillips. One has nothing to do with the other) and we had to get it fixed. So my awesome Katie fixed him right up. Ian is now no longer ‘Emo.’ (apparently I like Emo. Go figure)

My Thurz Girls are saying goodbye to one of our favorite waiters tonight Paolo and his family are headed back home. It’s a sad day here in the Rock.

I don’t know what I’m going to wear to work today. Must get on that.

Any mish or mash you’d like to add?

getting back to it

Routine…I have a love/hate relationship with it.

Routine can often mean rut and frankly, I’m not the kinda girl who is okay with being in a rut. Change is good for the soul.

However, routine can also mean order, consistency, and a clean(er) house. I AM very much ready for that.

Sent Ian off to school today. It is his first day as a Sophomore and for this member of the Francis family, it is also the first day of getting back on a routine.

This summer has been a whirlwind of waking up, doing stuff, and going to bed. There has been no routine. It was a nice break, but after 10 weeks, it’s time for the break to be over. I mean, I even fell out of laundry routine! Clean and folded clothes are highly overrated.

The last 2 days I spent cleaning out Ian’s room. Yes, I’m aware he should be doing this, but frankly, I wanted it done right the first time…Now his room is actually cleaner than mine. (mainly b/c I have 3 baskets of laundry that need to be folded. I promise, it’s on my to do list!)

Today we work on Rader’s room, my room and my desk. The desk area gets a little out of hand during edits/revisions. Plus it also becomes the cemetery for the things I take out of Ruby’s mouth. Like applesauce containers, Mountain Dew bottles, my wallet (she takes my purse off the chair and gets into it when she’s mad at me) chapstick, chewed up pencils and pens.

Do you guys keep a routine during the summer or take a break. Which do you think is better? I’m not a structure girl by any stretch, but I’m beginning to think maybe I need a bit more in my life. Or maybe I just need a fairy godmother…

Farrah, Friday, and Fun

Once my coffee kicks in, I’m going to clean this morning, then have lunch with writing pal Kait Nolan as she drives through town. Then I head to the lake to spend time with my parents and Rader. Ian has returned from his week-long trip in Dallas. I’ve missed him terribly, but he’s not going to the lake with us this weekend. At 15, he’s just too cool for that kinda thing.

In other news, I’m really sad about Farrah Fawcett and Michael Jackson, but I have to say, I’m really irritated at the media for spending so much time on MJ’s death. Farrah battled cancer for three years and did it with dignity and grace. Growing up, I didn’t know any girl who didn’t wanna be her, and I didn’t know any boy who didn’t wanna do her.

I stared at this poster every morning for years. I went blond, feathered my hair, and bought a red bathing suit. I never quite got there, but I wanted it.

Most people remember Farrah from Charlie’s Angels, but I remember her from Logan’s Run. As a matter of fact, I had a Logan’s Run beach towel.

RIP Farrah. I’ll always be a fan.

ack!

I didn’t blog yesterday! WTF, dude? My only excuse is that I didn’t get much sleep the night before and just flat out forgot. My bad.

I really wish I had something enlightened to share with you today, or a good story, but not really.

This week is British Soccer camp week. Those of you who are regular readers of my blog, know what a fan of British Soccer Camp I am… For the 1st time in 4 years we’re not hosting any coaches–which is a good thing, because when we do host, I tend to NEVER sleep. The lads are always entertaining. (and very easy on the eyes)

I hit the gym and the track yesterday for the first time in a few weeks. Did circuit room, abs, and walked 4 miles in about 45 minutes. I’m sore today. Feeling it big time. But I’m glad I went. I’m gonna blog over at Fat Chicks Running this afternoon about my time on the walking track. It’s pretty funny. I’m apparently a ‘rule breaker.’ I know–you’re shocked!

Ian has been in Dallas for a week watching his cousin play some kick ass soccer in a National Tournament. Taylor’s team is now in the finals. Am hoping to get some pics soon to post for ya soon.

That’s about all that’s going on here. Nothing witty or snappy today. I’m just too tired. Maybe I’ll be able to muster up funny for tomorrow.

Stay tuned.

What’s going on this week with you guys?

Jr Chef

My youngest son has always enjoyed helping out in the kitchen. I first noticed it a few Thanksgivings ago, when he was curious about how I make pies: specifically the pumpkin pie which is is favorite. Since then, I’ve been encouraging him to help out when he can.

He’s 11 now and so yesterday I decided it was time for him to learn to cook. We’re going to do a new recipe once a week over the summer. We’re going to shop for the ingredients, discuss any adjustments we’d like to make, and then cook.

For our first lesson, we started out with this recipe from the Whole Foods website: Cheesy Lasagna Rolls

We hit the grocery store, bought the ingredients. Once we got home, we set out everything we were going to need and got started. We decided to add a couple of more cheeses to the stuffing and make it a 3-cheese stuffed roll, decided against adding a meat this time, but think bacon or sausage would be fantastic in this. I’m also pretty sure I would love to add artichokes and may try that next time.

The basic ingredients are spinach, marinara sauce, and ricotta cheese (we added mozzarella and parmesan into the ricotta mixture) And of course lasagna noodles. We used 7.

Rader is adding sea salt to the water to boil our noodles.

When your noodles are al dente, you lay them flat, spread cheese, marinara, and layer some spinach on the noodle.
Then you roll up the noodle

And place it upright in the pan

Once you’ve placed all the rolls in the pan, spoon remaining marinara over each roll, sprinkle with mozzarella (and Parmesan) and bake 20 minutes at 400 degrees or until golden brown

They were DELICIOUS! and so easy.

Cheesy Stuffed Lasagna Rolls from Wholefoods.com

Salt
1/2 pound (8 to 10) uncooked lasagna noodles
Nonstick cooking spray
1 cup ricotta cheese
1 1/2 cups prepared marinara sauce
1 1/2 cups packed baby spinach
1/2 cup shredded mozzarella

We added Mozzarella and Parmesan into the Ricotta as well, and made them 3-cheese rolls

Method

Preheat oven to 400°F. Meanwhile, bring a large pot of salted water to a boil, add noodles and cook until al dente, 8 to 10 minutes. Drain well and gently transfer to a clean work surface.

Grease a small roasting pan or casserole dish with cooking spray; set aside. Working with one noodle at a time, spread with about 2 tablespoons of the ricotta and 2 tablespoons of the marinara then top with spinach. Starting at one end, roll up noodle snugly then arrange in pan either seam-side down or with the rolls close enough together to hold each other closed. Pour remaining marinara over assembled rolls then sprinkle with mozzarella and bake until golden and bubbly, 20 to 25 minutes.

whew!

Okay, so the website is launched and I am happy. Mega-thanks to Fishdog for working like mule to get it done. Hey guys, don’t forget you can download some fun wallpapers for your cellphones!

In case you missed it, yesterday over at Lucienne Diver’s blog, we had dueling vamps going with our two heroines. Today fellow Arkansas author Stacey Jay will be taking on the zombie side of vampires vs. zombies. (As if there really is a competition. I mean zombies are gross. And rotting. How could zombie-breath be even remotely sexy?) Stop by and check things out today.

This is the last week of school for #2 son and then we’re onto our summer schedule. And by summer schedule I mean sleeping late, going to Wild River Country every day and movies every weekend. When we’re not at the lake. Tough life for a kid, huh?

Anything going on this week that I need to know about? Anything fun or exciting?

singing in the rain

It’s still raining here. It has pretty much rained everyday for two weeks. Happiness this does not make.

But I’m still singing. Because that’s what I do.

I love to sing. I suck at it, but I love to do it. I can’t help myself. I think it drives the family nuts, but whatever, they’ll eventually get over it or get used to it. Right?

I’m not the only ‘singer’ in my family though. Rader is constantly singing. It doesn’t matter if it’s a commercial, or a TV theme song, or a real song. He pretty much only has to hear it once and then he’s singing it. Word for word.

His favorites are the FREE CREDIT REPORT commercials. All of them. And for the record, I sing along with commercials, too.

It makes me smile every time he sings because deep down inside I know he inherited it from me. LOL

The MONTH OF MEL: DAY 16–IAN’S BDAY!

Dear Ian, I mean, Nemo,

You don’t look like this anymore

or this:

or this:

or even this:

But you’ll always be my baby. I can’t believe you’re 15 years old today. First of all, I’m way too young, and way too hot to be the mother of a 15 year old child. Secondly, what happened to the tee-tiny little baby, whose butt was so small it fit in the palm of my hand?

I’m so proud of the man you’re becoming (even though your grades still need some work.) (You knew I had to mention your grades, right?)

You know I how much I love you when I’m willing to give up a day in the MONTH OF MEL! just for you!
