I’ve Simpsonized the family…what do you think?

mother’s day
Usually, we do a movie for Mother’s Day but this year, the only thing that the boys were willing to take me to was Spiderman 3 and it’s not on my to see list. Looks a bit too melodramatic even for me. I like my cheese on a cracker, not on the big screen.
So I told them I wanted to plant an herb garden this year and they could help. Imagine the joy they felt in their hearts to know they were going to have to help Mom plant stuff instead of going to a movie.
In their defense, they managed to assist me with my tomatoes and peppers pretty much without complaint. But about five minutes into the herb portion of the planting, they wandered off toward the water hose and a mud puddle–where they spent the next 3 hours making a total mess of the backyard, but having a damn fine time doing it.
Here’s the product of our labor:
I had Fishdog and the boys buy this planter spefically for my herb garden. Isn’t it awesome? I planted 9 herbs: Lemon Basil, Dill, Thyme, Cilantro, Roesmary, Lemon Verbena, Parsley, and Oregeno

In the back row I have 3 tomato plant and the other 4 pots contain various peppers. I love homemade salsa, don’t you?
Here’s the front flowerbed that I finally managed to mulch on Sunday after spending all last weekend weeding and planting. If all works out like I’ve planned, all the empty spaces will soon be filled with wildflowers
The side garden (it’s really all one big garden) This is where my roses are planted. They are doing beautifully now!
14 years and counting

2 kids and a couple of pantsizes later and still going strong.
the evil wizard does exist!

I understand there is some video available of said Pelham incident. But if I have anything to do with it, that video will never see the light of day…or the light of Fishdog’s blog.
edited to add: apparently photobucket is having some technical difficulties with its slideshows. Hopefully, it’ll be working by tomorrow. If not, I’ll post a link to the pics with their captions. 🙂

planning ahead…
This planning ahead thing is a fairly new concept for me.
The fam and I are headed to sunny Florida in two weeks. Since we’ll be gone for 11 days, the Fishdog and I have decided it might be prudent to start planning now.
So yesterday at lunch, we began to plan by making lists. Now, I’ve never been a list maker. I’m more of an organic, go-with-the-flow kinda gal. List making has always been too structured for me. You MUST complete this list or you have failed! Aaaagh! That goes against my go-with-the-flow nature!
But, I’m glad we made a list, cuz I see Fishdog has a lot to do before we leave.
I really can’t wait to head out. We’re going to Tallahassee for a couple of days to visit the Geraci
Clan. Then we’re headed down to Orlando to do the Disney/Universal Stuidos thing for a few days. We’re meeting my parents and my brother and his family there. We’ve rented a big house with a pool, so it should be a lot of fun. (with the help of a fermented beverage or two. That is a lot of family in one space…)
Rader hasn’t been to Disney yet. He’s 9, so it should be just about right for him to truly enjoy the rides. I’m excited about riding the Incredible Hulk Coaster with Rader. Totally stoked. Ian likes coasters, but he’s not fond of upside down…I prefer upside down over long drops. The Incredible Hulk Coaster has 7 inversions. Awesome.
After our Orlando stint, we’re traveling to the coast for a day or two. Ahhhh, the beach. I’ll get to see my friend and now my face crack dealer, Angie, and her sweet six month old baby. And if it all works out, I’ll get to meet Mr. Angie.
Then it’s home again. Fishdog will be busy with laundry on Sunday while I rest. Laying out on the beach can be exhausting!
mmmmmmmmm
Wow. I couldn’t have asked for a better day. (other than someone doing the cooking for me… but then, if that had happened, would it have been as good? I think not.) We had 20 people at our house. 20! And it was a lovely day.
4 of the 20 were vegetarians, so I fixed some vegetable soup and some stuffed butternut squash. (which was, by far, my fave thing on the menu.)
We also had some vegetarian stuffing (made by my momma and it was YUMMY) and some vegetable soup, salad, and rice.
Not to mention the usuals.
Kagan and his lovely wife brought 2 million pies. Okay, so really it was only 6 but seriously, it coulda been 2 million. Here’s what’s left over.
twfkam
Fishdog refers to me as twfkam in his blog.
Several of you flit over to the flophaus and take a gander every now and then and then come back and ask me what the hell twfkam means.
The Woman Formerly Known As Momma.
See, I have this thing about my husband calling me momma. I hate it. Absolutely, fucking, hate it. With one exception…when he’s talking to me for the kids. “Momma, can you help Rader with his homework while I do something manly like light the grill?” That’s fine. I have no issue with that.
But, when we’re out together, just the two of us, or we’re at home, just the two of us, or the kids are in the room but Fishdog is speaking to me about something that has nothing to do with them, or if he is blogging about me– he is no longer allowed to call me momma.
It’s been a hard adjustment for him, but he finally did manage to stop referring to me as momma in his blog. Sometime this past spring he finally got a clue. It’s only taken me twelve years to get it into his head…but hey, at least he can be taught, right?
chef-boy
Last night, Rader and I made three batches of brownies. We’re mailing two batches to the lads in Nebraska and we kept one for ourselves.
He was very excited about cooking. He read the directions on the back of the box and gathered the ingredients.
Rader: 1/3 cup of water and 1/3 cup of oil and 1 egg.
Me: Very good. Now, if we’re making three boxes how much oil and water do we need.
Rader: Three thirds.
Me: Right. But, is that really a measurement we use? What does three thirds cups equal.
He thought about it for a second then smiled.
Rader: That’s one cup!
Me: Excellent!
He was proud he figured that out…as he should be. Then he got to the most important part of baking…
Rader: Mom? Can I wear an apron?
Of course you can!

I tried to get Ian involved. Hell, it was his idea to cook the lads brownies in the first place…but he was too busy on the computer chatting with his girlfriend. I guess he has his priorities…
fun with pictures
So, we went to Lake Oauchita (pronounced WASH i tah) over the weekend. I would’ve blogged about that Monday had we not come home to a 92 degree house.
Now that we’re back to proper climate control, I can get back to the blog that shoulda been.
Two other couples met us at the lake, Birdrunner and her family and my old boss/friend who now lives in Little Rock, Allison, and her family.
Now, you may think we had fun by looking at the slideshow, however I can assure you the best pictures are below.
We’re not really sure what Birdrunner was thinking when she sat on the styrofoam ice chest, but let me tell ya, I’m really glad she did it, cuz I haven’t laughed like that in a looooooong time.
