notes from the universe

Every morning I receive a note from The Universe in my inbox. Sometimes they’re funny little quips, other times they’re notes of encouragement, sometimes they’re little reminders that things will get better, but always they’re a positive way to start out my day.

Here’s this morning’s message:

I can imagine that from your perspective, it must seem like some truly awful things happen in time and space. So if you wouldn’t mind, I’d like to weigh in.

Melissa, you live in a world of illusions. A world that springs from a much deeper and far greater reality. And while at times the illusions are indeed ugly, with your physical senses you only see the tip of the iceberg. If you could see the whole, you’d discover that the unpleasantness was only the tiniest piece of a most spectacular puzzle that was created with order, intelligence, and absolute love. You’d see that contrary to appearances, in the grandest scheme of things, nothing is ever lost, no one becomes less, and setbacks are always temporary. And you’d understand that no matter what has happened, everyone lives again, everyone laughs again, and everyone loves again, even more richly than before.

Hubba, hubba –
The Universe

Thought that was worth sharing. Even the Hubba, hubba.

Dear Sandman,

It’s official. We’re in a fight.

Dude. Seriously. It’s Saturday morning. Couldn’t you have just sprinkled me with a wee bit more sleeping dust last night?

This is how I’m going to greet you until you let me sleep past 4:00 A.M. again.

That is all.

-Mel

things that make me happy

The holidays are always full of cheer, but I decided to make a list of things that make me happy year around. In no particular order:

  • Hot coffee first thing in the morning.
  • ABBA, Bee Gees, and Donna Summer
  • Dragonflies
  • My boys’ goofy laughs
  • Fishdog’s sense of humor.
  • The number 897
  • Phone calls from my BFFs
  • Emails from long-lost friends
  • Ruby (see picture. How could that face not make you happy?)
  • Boston Legal (Why is this the last season??), Patrick Jane, How I Met Your Mother
  • Maker’s Mark
  • Diamond Bear Beer
  • The Beach
  • The smell of fresh honeysuckle, new money, and puppy breath.
  • Dirty Dancing (the movie, not the activity. Though I don’t mind a good dirty dance every once in a while.) The Replacements, American President, Robin Hood Men in Tights.

Of course, that’s not a complete list, but it’s a good start. What about you? What can you think of, turn on, or look at that instantly lifts your spirits?

Writing update:
Yesterday was a writing bust because I spent the majority of the day deciphering my son’s microscopic handwriting and then last night, I taught him how to properly edit his research paper. I was cross-eyed by the time it was over. Today will be a different story.

morning rush

I’m buying groceries this morning. I hate that task–but I love to eat, so there you have it.

For a much more fun post (actually several) head over to Fat Chicks Running. I actually posted a video blog yesterday. Yes, it’s true. I also did a very bad impression of South Park’s Cartman–you don’t wanna miss that! Be sure and scroll down to see it.

This morning I woke up to a very nice surprise–Amanda of Amanda’s Little Rock blog on About.com gave the Fat Chicks a shout out. That was awesome. Pop over and tell her thanks for us. 😉

Check y’all later!

conversations with a head cold

*blowing nose*

Me: Hmmm, I need to write.

My head: Whateber. You need to sleeb.

Me: I don’t want to sleep anymore. I slept yesterday. A lot. And I feel better today.

My head: Think about how much bedder you’ll feel tomorrow if you sleeb more today.

Me: I’m on deadline.

My head: Yeah, but you may have to start ober anyway because of your computer mess.

Me: Are you trying to drive me to the bottle at 8:30 in the morning?

My head: Would drinking helb you sleeb? Then yes.

zen

A good hair day makes the bad Monday go away.

Right?

Also, I bought a new wireless keyboard for the Mac desktop. It’s not ergonomic but it does make typing easier. The keyboard that came with the desktop required superhuman strength to type.

I still have a cold and the meds are wearing off so I’m feeling a little bleh now, but in a few hours I can take some NyQuil and nod off into the land of medicated dreams. Oh yeah. That’s definitely something to look forward to.

changing veils…

In this time of economic crisis…where we have 2 house payments, 1 income and me trying to avoid waiting tables at all cost (everyone take a moment to send good thoughts out to the two proposals that are in NY…Momma needs a new pair of shoes to buy groceries!) I’m making some sacrifices.

We’re cutting back everywhere we can.

And one of the places I’ve decided to sacrifice is my hairdresser. Okay, not completely. She’s still going to cut my hair, but I can’t afford to have her cut and color it every 6 weeks. (Katie, if you’re reading this, I’ll see you next week for a cut.)

I’ve been blond for forever. I get a wild hair up my ying-yang every once in a while and color it red or brown but I always go back to blond. since I can’t afford to have Katie color my hair, I can’t maintain my blond at home. It’s just too difficult.

So my BFF from high school and I went shopping for boxed color. And we found this:

L’Oreal Excellence Creme Light Reddish Brown (6RB)

And now, I’m no longer a blond.

Here is a picture of me from this spring:

What do you think? Good change or bad?

some of my favorite things

My bulletin board above my desk. You’ll see my Scotland mementos that my wee lad Grant sent me a couple of years ago. (He’s living in the states full time now…in Cincinnati and he’s loving it.)
This is a necklace that I made. I love it. I wear it a lot.

This is the Tshirt my college girlfriends/bridesmaids made for me to wear at my Bachelorette party 15.5 years ago.
Here’s a close-up. Yes, those are all pictures of me. No I’m not going to tell you what the ‘thought bubble’ says.
Every Thursday my girlfriends and I get together at Cheers and we’re waited on by Adolfo and we giggle and laugh. I love the laughing. Lately, I’ve needed a lot of laughter.
Ruby. Seriously, how could you not love that face?
This was my wedding present from Fishdog.

This was one of the first things Nemo made for me when he was taking pottery. I love my crocodile.
My Crackberry. If you don’t understand the love of the Crackberry…you don’t have one.

Rader’s laughter. Look familiar?

We’re sassy!

To catch you up on the open house…

We are just going to ride out this bad economy storm and hope that maybe things will turn around in the spring. The good news is, we can write our losses off for the year, so that will help.

Something that cheered me up this weekend?
My friends Dana Belfry and Eden Bradley (pictured) thought of me while they were hanging out together. Hmmm, wonder what made them think of me?

I’m plowing onward and upward with LOVE SUX!SUCKS! (still not used to writing it that way) I’ve had a scene bouncing around in my head all weekend long that I can’t stop thinking about, so I think I’m going to write it today to see what happens. I am usually a very linear writer, but every once in a while a scene just needs to be written out of sequence. I’ll let you know how that ends up.

And finally, I’m blogging about music over at Fictionistas today. Click the banner below!

SELL BABY SELL!

I’m re-purposing the RNC’s favorite mantra of Drill Baby Drill and making it my own.

SELL BABY SELL.

After taking a weekend off, I’m now heading back to Oxford. Hopefully this will be the last ‘mow’ of the season. Am also hoping this will be the last trip forever, because we need to sell. Big time.

But you know that, so I’m not going to dwell on it anymore.

Sorry I wasn’t around yesterday, I was tweaking my latest proposal. I sent it off to Deidre last night and now I’m going to start focusing on finishing up LOVE SUX! SUCKS!

Yes, we’ve changed the title slightly of the follow up book to BITE ME! Personally, I preferred SUX! (I think it looks better than SUCKS!) but it’s not a big deal. I love the title and wanted to keep it, so really that’s what matters. I’ve gotten lucky to be able to keep both of my titles so far. I dread the day I’m told it has to change. I know that usually the change is for the better, but still, it will suck! <– see what I did there? I haz a clever.

I haven’t really had much to say in the political arena lately. Mainly because I don’t really have anything new to say. There was an article in the local paper yesterday about folks stealing yard signs. I know two other people who’ve had their Obama signs taken around here. I have heard that a few McCain signs have been taken, but I haven’t spoken to anyone personally who’s had their McPalin sign stolen.

That’s about it. Gotta get the young un to school and hit the road. I’ll try to tweet and keep y’all updated here if anything good happens.

Peace!
