a things and stuffs blog

Tonight we celebrate Jenn Christman’s bday. There will be margaritas involved. And sparkle. And possibly cookies.
Usually I have the Pomegranate margarita but recently I’ve discovered the Antonio Banderas La Bandera Margarita that is really, really yummy. It has a bit of Pomegranate and Midori and fresh squeezed lime and lemon juices as well as tequila and Cointreau. It packs a punch. A very tasty punch.
I also brought my shoes to wear tonight. You know which shoes I’m talking about, right?

Yes. THOSE SHOES. Because everyone’s birthday should be celebrated with these shoes…I wish I could wear them all day, but as we all know, I have trouble walking in flip flops sometimes…so there’s no way I’d ever attempt to walk on campus in these bad boys.
Also, today will mark the return of my SWEET BABY MACBOOK! Yippee! I have missed you SBMB. So. So. Much.
What else is going on? El Jefe’s dad is in town. He’s a hoot. They are heading to the Big Dam(n) Bridge this morning to check it out. Wish I could join them, but they expect me to show up at the office. Humph. I should get paid just for being me. Where’s that job? The interview would be like this: Mel, you are sparkletastic and we want to pay you 100 million billion dollars just for being you. How’s that sound?
Me (humbly of course) wow. I think that sounds reasonable. Thank you!
And then me and all my besties would run off to some beach, somewhere together…

2011: Month of Mel Day 29: Happy Birthday!

Happy Birthday Daddy!

(That’s Cotton to you)

This pic is from my launch party for BITE ME! in August 2009. My hair is redder now and I’m about 20 lbs lighter (and those glasses are at the bottom of Lake Ouachita)… but my daddy still looks the same. 🙂 Here’s some fun trivia about Cotton.

  • He had WHITE hair until he was in his late teens–hence his nickname.
  • He always wore a leather belt with his nickname engraved on the back.
  • I have never heard him call me by my name. It’s either Lissa Jane (my middle name is Renee) or it’s “Gal.”
  • He coached my softball teams for most of my life. This was a blessing and a curse.
  • When he was told Ian’s name after he was born, Daddy asked, “N?” as in L, M, N, O, P?” Sadly, he was not the only person who asked that. And even more sadly, Ian has a friend who has never called him anything other than N. hahaha
  • He taught me to change my oil and tires when I was a teen. (now I have Goodyear for that.)
  • He had 2 favorite sayings when I was growing up: “She’s so ugly she’d have to sneak up on a pail of water to get a drink.” and “Wish in one hand and “mmmmph” in the other and see which one fills up first.” (btw, he always said “mmmmph” and I was in my 20s before I learned that “mmmmph” was actually supposed to be”shit.” The saying never made sense to me until that moment.)
  • His favorite dessert was canned peaches with oreos crushed on top. (I know, right? *shudder*)
  • Nobody can fry fish better.

I would also like to send a shout out and a big HAPPY SWEET 16 to my darling niece TAYLOR MARIE. I love you kiddo and miss you lots and lots. Hope to see you this summer!!!

2011: The Month of Mel; The DAY OF NEMO

My eldest son turns 17 today. (Obviously I was a teen mom…) It’s so difficult for me to remember this child:

Ian may be known as Nemo by all of his friends now, but when he was first born, he was known as Treefrog. He was born almost a full month early (Thank the maternity gods) and was a tee-tiny little 5 lbs 6 oz. Which means his itty bitty booty fit into the palm of my hand.
Then our little Treefrog grew up and we started to call him Goose. (I can’t remember for the life of me why.) Anyway, Goose had a real hard time keeping his clothes on. I think he was probably 5 or 6 years old before we convinced him that joining a Nudist Colony was not a part of our life plan, so please put on your underwear.

My baby ain’t a baby no more… Happy Birthday, Nemo. Let’s eat some ribs tonight!

2011: Month of Mel Day 10 (and soon to be the Day of Ralph)

Look! Official proof I finished the half-marathon!

There are other pictures and even a video clip of me “running” across the finish line. Painful to watch. But hey, the goal was to finish…not finish with style. Hah!

Now onto the fun stuff! My friends Sara & Jim are somewhere in the ATL birfin’ a baby Ralphasaurus today! C’mon into the world, Ralph. There are loads of Aunties and Uncles who can’t wait to meet you!

I love sharing my month with very awesome people. And babies who are being born to awesome people. (who will naturally grow up to be awesome.)

Happy soon to be birthday, Ralph!

In other news, here’s what I’ve decided to give up for Lent:

Who’s with me?

run and tell THAT, homeboy

I can’t enough of these two videos. The first one gets good about 43 seconds, when they start actually interviewing the victim and her brother. Watch it. Then watch the music video. And THEN tell me you didn’t laugh your arse off.

The song is available on iTunes. I’m thinking it’s a ‘must buy.’

Run and tell THAT. Oh, and you’re welcome for the earworm. 🙂

Happy birthday to my dear friend Dee Dee. Love you!

It’s a Cotton Pickin’ birthday!

Okay, Internet. Please say Happy Birthday to my daddy, Cotton. (you can also call him Slick Mac) and to my beautiful rock-awesome niece Taylor. Happy 15th!!

This weekend was a blur. I was a busy girl. Soccer Mom duties Saturday morning, seeing my bro-in-law!, lunch with my faves Saturday afternoon. A margarita before heading to the Electric Cowboy with my friend Jenn to see the finals of the Arkansas’ Funniest Person contest. (Congrats to Eric Counts! Job well done, sir!) Then afterward….cheese fries, beer, new friends, From Dusk til Dawn (which I had never seen before…which seemed to shock the folks because how can I write vampire books but not watch vampire movies?)

Yesterday I napped a wee bit, painted a wee bit, and watched stupid, freaking-farking Duke beat Baylor. I hate that Baylor choked. (I’m actually talking about why I hate Duke over at Fictionistas today. Check it out when you get a chance…)

How was your weekend, Internet? Were you productive or a slug? And is there anyone out there with a NCAA bracket that’s still alive?
