Prom:
Author Archives: Just Call Me Mel
Let’s all get lucky today!
hairs day! prom! friends! wine! opossum!
Today I get my hairs did. Which is good, because my Go-Go Red needs to be punched up a bit.
We pick up Ian’s tux this afternoon. Prom. ❤
I had a great night with an old friend last night. Well, “old” as in lifelong…We hadn’t seen each other in a decade. It was amazing catching up with her. We will not wait so long to hang out again.
Another awesome thing about last night? She introduced me to a wonderful new wine. And you know I always love new wine. Especially when it’s in a bottle!! (Unless it is that crappy white zinfadel. That belongs in the toilet.)
Paul Hobbs Chardonnay. ZOMG. My taste buds and liver were so damn happy.
ION (of the weird variety) There was a possum in our backyard this morning. (or as one of my high school teachers would say: Miss McKenzie, that would be opossum. there is no such animal as a “possum”) Frieda Mae actually picked it up and carried it around like puppy. I’M NOT KIDDING, PEOPLE! Picked. It. Up. Then it played dead. It was very committed to its role as dead possum. El Jefe scooped it up with a shovel and dust pan and placed it on the other side of the fence…where it continued to play dead.
Welcome to Arkansas.
If it’s still there when I get home, I’m going to name it Fred Finkle.
sowing the seeds
My blog title sounds deep, huh? Except I’m being literal…check out the progress on the seeds I have sown!
This is after 1 week of growth. I can’t wait for flowers!
Oh and before I forget, here’s my daily check in from yesterday:
Writing: No new words, but I read over my pages and notes that I’ve made.
Exercise: Walked on campus yesterday. Nothing really strenuous, but definitely movement. Today I will be going to the gym at lunch.
This past Saturday, a group of us got together for a patio cookout. Check out the view!
We had a great night…lots of food and laughter, and for once, I wasn’t the one taking all the pictures! I did, however, apply a filter to one of them just because I find it totally fun.
I’ve been told the next cookout will be held at the Compound de MelJefe. I suppose I should start looking for a date…and possibly purchase a grill. 🙂
day one
Today is a new day. I’m greeting it with a smile, an open heart and a new direction.
I’m guilty of lying to myself, but no more. It’s time to dig back in and give myself a giant wake up slap. I have the family and friend thing covered in spades, but it’s high time I make writing and exercise a priority in my life again. I actually miss both and I’m sick of making excuses for not doing them.
So you,my internet friends, have been put on notice. I’m back in the saddle. My latest WIP is titled THE REMEDIES and it’s a darker science fiction story. (don’t worry, it will have plenty of humor in it as well. How can I not be funny?) Today is Day1.
If I don’t report back, I’m asking you to hold me accountable. I must write something everyday–even if it’s a paragraph. And I have to tell you about it.
As far as fitness goes, I really want to run the half-marathon again next March. I’m not so much worried about weight loss (though I probably should be) but I am worried about being healthy and happy. So today is Day 1 again… I must do something physical every day and report back. If I don’t–you bitches better shame me.
I’m not even joking.
Now on a less serious note, check out my little friend. He was hurt and fluttering around unsuccessfully on our screened-in-porch last night. I moved him outside to save him from certain death by Bobcat Greyskull…
Happy Happy
oh it’s a good friday indeed.
Bobcat Greyskull loves this azalea bush because of the butterflies. He’s the master of butterfly attacks and I try to be their protector, but sadly, he still manages to get one or two.
Clementine is hard core. Butterflies are for babies. She laughs at them. Yesterday, apparently she brought El Jefe a cardinal. I saw a giant crow in the field today and wondered where Clementine was hiding. I know she was plotting its demise.
So this is apparently Easter weekend. Happy Easter to those of you who celebrate. What this means for me? Mom’s baked ham. Mmmmmm.
Today is pedi day! I’m so excited because my disco toes now look like they’ve been used up in a back alley and left for dead.
In other news…my flower bed is sprouting! I planted Zinnias, Sweet William, Cosmos, Daisies (duh), Cornflower, and Foxglove. My house should be full of fresh cut flowers this summer. YAY!
So happy happy weekend to all my peeps. <–hurr (see what I did there? Easter? Peeps? Hurr Hurr!) I’ll see you Monday!
hello Wine Wednesday
I’m so happy to see you again.
Ian has prom next week and will be getting fitted for a tux tonight. OMG. My baby treefrog has prom. Now if I could just get him to drive…
Friday, I have pedi-time scheduled with Bell Bottoms. I’ve been checking out the spring/summer OPI colors and I’m having a hard time choosing. I hope CK Nails has the 2012 Holland colors…Here’s where I’m leaning:
life or something like it
We have high school orientation tonight. Rader is going to attend Catholic High for Boys here in Little Rock next year. It’s a great school academically. Ideologically it is not my preference, but we’ve raised a smart kid who thinks for himself and hopefully will not allow the prep school uniformity change who he is at his core.
This is the kid who wears HeeHaw overalls and “John Daly” pants on purpose. This is the kid who decided to grow his hair out and donate it to Locks of Love on his own. This is the kid who’s best friend is of Pakistani/Indian descent… So yeah, the prep school white-washed “let’s all be the same” thing worries me. However, academically, this is a top notch school and Rader needs to be challenged. He’s so upset with his current Social Studies teacher for just ‘giving up’ by making them do glossary words as crossword puzzles and COLOR. Yes, they have a project where they have to draw and color a scene from a movie. For Social Studies. Really?
Speaking of his hair, check it out:
I asked him today if he was going to wait until school starts to cut it (they are required to have their hair off the collar, above the ears, and above the eyebrows at Catholic). Rader said he might get it cut the last week of school just to freak out all his friends. Heh. No matter when he cuts it, he definitely has enough to make a sizable Locks of Love donation.
In other news, I’m a little riled up over these super conservatives trying to legislate women’s bodies. Georgia passed the “women as livestock bill” yesterday. That title came about after Rep. Terry England (R-Auburn) compared pregnant women carrying stillborn fetuses to the cows and pigs on his farm. According to Rep. England and his warped thought process, if farmers have to “deliver calves, dead or alive,” then a woman carrying a dead fetus, or one not expected to survive, should have to carry it to term. I don’t care what your views on abortion are. I care that men who can think of women as livestock, should not be making laws concerning women. If they are so big on less government, then why are they trying to legislate women’s bodies? That sounds pretty big to me…/political soapbox.
Sorry. I don’t often talk politics here, but this is a huge hot button for me. I’m passionate about HUMAN rights. Period. Mind your own business, stay out of people’s bodies and bedrooms.
rollin’ like a boss
El Jefe has a new ride. Well, it’s a “new to him” ride and she’s a beauty. 1985 Mercedes 300D Turbo Diesel. Trust me, he’s rollin’ like a boss in this baby.
She needs some TLC that’s for sure, but her interior is almost impeccable. This will be a fun car to restore. I’m going to make him wear a driver’s hat while I sit in the backseat and sip my cocktail. Drive on, James. (why are the drivers always named James?)
While we were in Hot Springs picking up his new girlfriend car, we decided to stop in for a beverage at The Ohio Club: The oldest bar in Arkansas. I’m pretty sure I sat next to Al Capone…or was sitting on Mae West’s lap…It’s a great old bar and we’ll have to go back again.
Jefe tried a new monk-made beer: St. Berarndus
And I tried what was touted as the “Best Beer in the World.” It was yummy, but I’m not sure it was the best…
We did loads of yard work on Saturday, I planted tons of seeds that will hopefully turn into a giant bed of color here in a few weeks. I’ll keep you posted.
How was your weekend?
