our weekend of rapture…

You were left behind, too? WHAT? You mean we’re going to have to wait til 2012 now for our awesome playlist to be relevant?

I laughed yesterday when I read a status from a FB friend that said, “Wasn’t that like, the worst apocalypse EVER?”

FWIW, on the drive up to Northwest Arkansas on Friday, we thought the end was actually coming a day early. A black cloud of doom descended upon us. It was swirly and ugly but thankfully, no tornado formed.
This weekend Rader had soccer in Bella Vista, AR… so Jefe and I decided to get raptured from Beaver Lake where we stayed for the weekend while attending Rader’s tournament.

The Deathcats won their bracket and I rather enjoyed my rapture, so I’d say this weekend was full of win.

Beaver Lake is seriously so pretty that you should hate me on principle.
Saturday night, we headed to one of my favorite spots in Eureka Springs, AR: The Rowdy Beaver. (or as my friend’s mom calls it, The Randy Beaver. hehe) The Lori Locke Band was playing and we really dug their show. Good set of pipes and lots of talent to back her up.

All in all we had a great weekend. There was a little bit of mischievous recon action on the way home yesterday, but that information will remain in the vault. I will tell you strategery was involved. And ticks. Lots and lots of ticks…

cobble, cobble, cobble!

Today is National Cherry Cobbler Day!

So let’s all pop our cobbler cherries together! How awesome would it be if we all ate cherry cobbler today? I’m pretty sure no matter how bad your day is, if you have a slice of cherry cobbler, it’s gonna get better. (admittedly, cherry cobbler is no apple pie, but it’s a good runner up…)

Here’s a tried and true cherry cobbler recipe from Southern Living (printed in 1999). Yes, this is a recipe that I have in my possession from my Southern Living days. It’s a good one. Enjoy.

Ingredients
  • 6 cups pitted fresh cherries (about 2 1/2 pounds)*
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar, divided
  • 3 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/2 teaspoon red liquid food coloring (optional)
  • 3 tablespoons butter or margarine
  • 1 tablespoon grated lemon rind
  • 1/4 teaspoon almond extract
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup butter or margarine
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 large egg
  • Ice cream
Preparation
  • Bring cherries, 3/4 cup sugar, cornstarch, 1/2 cup water, and, if desired, food coloring to a boil ina medium saucepan, stirring constantly. Boil, stirring constantly, 1 minute. Remove from heat; stir in 3 tablespoons butter, lemon rind, and almond extract. Pour into a lightly greased 11- x 7-inch baking dish.
  • Combine remaining 3/4 cup sugar, flour, baking powder, and salt in a large mixing bowl. Add milk, 1/4 cup butter, and vanilla, and beat at medium speed with an electric mixer 2 minutes. Add egg, and beat 2 more minutes. Spoon batter evenly over cherry mixture.
  • Bake at 350° for 40 to 45 minutes or until golden, shielding with aluminum foil during the last 10 minutes to prevent excessive browning, if necessary. Cool in dish on a wire rack 15 to 20 minutes. Serve warm with ice cream.

*3 (14.5 ounce) cans pitted tart red cherries can be substituted. Drain cherries, reserving 1/2 cup juice. Substitute reserved juice for 1/2 cup water.

In the world of irony (where I tend to live most of my life) in Ireland, today is National Famine Memorial Day. Not sure if they celebrate by fasting or not, but I say let’s change tradition just in case and celebrate with COBBLER!

pictures are worth thousands of words. Okay, maybe that’s a slight exaggeration

My weekend in pictures (and some brief narrative, because despite my lack of productivity in recent months, I am still a writer…)

Friday night… after fantastic pedicures with Robyn (go see Mickey at CK Nails on Cantrell. AWESOME) and while Ian was gallivanting about with his lovely girlfriend at the movies (they saw Thor and both said it was Surprisingly Awesome. Go figure) Rader and I had dinner with friends. We went to Salut where we had some of the absolute best homemade pasta I’ve ever eaten. Holy Spamoli I would have slapped my momma twice for the chicken cannelloni topped with fried spinach.

The next day, was soccer. All day of soccer. Down by the river…where I wish I had a van because the north wind was blowing and it was friggin’ cold. After game #1, Rader and I went to US Pizza for our favorite BBQ Chicken Pizza (it has jalapenos on it and is verra good)and this is where I took the pictures below:

My child is NOT RIGHT. He has all this hair, which I love…but it gets in his way during soccer. So we pull it back, but it falls out (well, it doesn’t now, thanks to my superior hair engineering abilities). Rader, being the sharp-as-a-tack guy that he is, took some pre-wrap and made a headband. I have referred to this as his Hair Injury.

Saturday night, we sat down with our tub of cheesy poufs to watch movies:

Yes, I had to fight them off my cheesy poufs. Ruby declared herself guardian of the pouf and Kitty G didn’t care. So she sat on my lap where she tried to take the poufs from my hands…

Sunday we had more soccer…and sadly the boys lost. Well, I am sad they lost, but not sad that I didn’t have to spend the rest of the day at Burns Park because I had 4+ hours of yard work to do. I don’t always have a lot of help, but Ruby decided she was all about John Deere Dreams this weekend.

When yard work was complete, Wolverine was put together…

And Trinity watched as El Jefe set up our HBOgo so that Rader and I can catch up on Game of Thrones which we are missing out on! I’m 4 shows behind now! The horror!!!

So…how was your weekend? Don’t worry if you didn’t get much done, I feel like I did enough for everyone!

ALSO: Please head to Fictionistas where my girl Stoney guest blogs today. You can follow Stoney on twitter [@stoneyboboney] and in the internetz at http://www.heydontjudgeme.com

this is it

Happy Friday y’all. After today, I am unemployed until May 9. You will find me basking on the beach next week. I’m sure I won’t be blogging much, but if you’re on FB, I’m sure I’ll be posting lots and lots of pics and possibly rubbing it in…(sunscreen, that is.)

In the name of Sand, Sun, and Surf I bid you adieu!

Have a great weekend!

happy happy joy joy

Today is Earth Day. Plant a tree. Use a recycled bag for groceries. Start composting. Recycle your beer & wine bottles (I alone may save the world…)

Start a new habit that will help Mother Earth stay young and beautiful…

The Arkansas Earth Day Festival is tomorrow! Go forth and play fellow Arkansans!

This is going to be a fantastic weekend, fellow interneters. I can’t wait to get it started. Well, after tonight’s Nerdsplosion, that is. Heroscape + 3 nerds in my living room = me adding more bottles of wine to my recycle bin.

Speaking of wine…

My friend Laura…she must start feeding me if she’s going to make me drink wine with her. That. Is. All.
Smile! It’s Ren & Stimpy and the Happiness Helmet! Happy Happy Joy Joy!

Get Me to the GEEK

Guys. GUYS! Are you watching Game of Thrones on HBO? If not, then you need to be. And if you don’t have HBO, now’s the time you suck it up and pay for it.

Wanna read the best recap of the show ever? My friend Stoney does a bang up job getting her Geek on with her D&D references, while throwing in some Ren and Stimpy love. (and really, who doesn’t want a Justice Log now?) This show is really fantastic if you’re a fantasy lover or a wanna be. (I’m a nerd, not a geek, but I’m totally working on my GeekCred by dating an UberGeek and by giving birth to an UberGeekWannaBe.)

There are also recaps other fabu stuff like Big Love, Southland, Batman: Year One, Robin: Year One and Snooki’s book. 🙂 Check out her site at Hey Don’t Judge Me! She’s +10 in Awesome.

2011: Month of Mel; Day 23

Yesterday I had a bit of a set back and my personal sparkle dulled for a while. Dudes, I’m not a big fan of dull so yesterday didn’t work for me at all.

I’m better today. Much better. It’s amazing how little notes and phone calls from friends can make you light up like a sparkler. I will never forget how lucky I am to have the people in my life that I do. I am good at surrounding myself with awesome. 🙂

And look! Sparkle Plenty can be yours, too!

But only if you’re a girl…

You know what else made me feel better? Watching Daniel Tosh Completely Serious on Netflix. Holy Crappin’ Damn he’s funny. And sooooo not right. Which makes me love him even more. Here’s an example of the awesome. It is sooooo very NSFW (unless you wear headphones…)

I got people to see and stuffs to do today. I’m having my Bday lunch with my bestie from high school on Friday. Yay for Sushi! Can’t wait!

Happy Humpday. Or Wine Wednesday. However you choose to celebrate…you know there’s no judgement here…

2011: Month of Mel Day 22: spring!

This morning I’m enjoying my coffee on my screened-in-porch watching the kittehs wreak havoc in the yard. No dead bird gifts so far, but it’s not for lack of trying…Clementine has also been skulking after the bunnies. Let’s hope she’s unsuccessful this year; sadly she wasn’t last year. She is hard.

I’m also blogging from my iPad today. (all hail ¡el jefe!). I’m using the touchscreen keyboard which is relatively easy to use. I’m even using both hands…and honestly I thought it would be more like texting than typing. So even tho I miss my baby Mac, my darling iPad looks to be a good substitute until I can get Mac fixed. iPad needs a name though. Will gladly take suggestions.

It’s going to be warm again today but it seems kinda overcast. I am supposed to walk with Birdrunner this afternoon so the weather better cooperate.

2011: Month of Mel Day 9

So I receive Notes from the Universe every day and they are awesome. How much do I love today’s note?

Here, Melissa, friends adore you, strangers admire you, and physical laws fear you.

OMG – Is this like “Melissa Francis World,” or what?

You can have it all,
The Universe

Dude. The Universe gets me.

In fun news, I got this new camera app for my iPhone (Camera+) and have been playing with all the fun extras.

Fun with Filters, Borders, and Lighting: OH MY!

Today is Wine Wednesday and I will be having me some of that with Birdrunner after work. Add in lunch with Laura and Jenn today and you have a very bright and happy(even if it is gloomy outside right now) day.

a nice surprise

Saturday afternoon, I popped over to fishdog’s house to pick up the kids. He wanted to show me he’d cleaned out the storage area (where he had very nicely boxed up all my romance novels in one box). We popped below the house to have a looksy. It was very neat and tidy. Who knew?

Anyway, he’d found my old 35 mm camera (not digital) and thought I might like to take the film to be processed somewhere. (do they still process film? haha) I took the camera and the boys and I went home.

Yesterday I was going through the bag, hoping maybe I’d stashed some cash inside…nope. No cash. But I did find something better…

My coin ring. I’d gotten this as a gift in high school. I always loved my coin ring because it was dainty and feminine…not like the manly rings everyone else had. I was thinking about this ring the other day, as a matter of fact….and look! Here it is! I bet I haven’t seen it in 8 years or more. (I bet when I get my pics developed I’ll be able to figure out exactly the year I last wore it…)

Here it is being modeled by Sarah Jessica Parker’s my Man Hands…
I had a great weekend. Made some new friends at the Fiction Writers of Central Arkansas meeting. I had fun chatting about my journey to publishing and just talking about the industry in general. Then they treated me to a very yummy lunch at Corky’s. I do love their hot BBQ sauce!
Afterward, there was an impromptu gathering on the patio at So. It was just too nice a day to go home…
The half-marathon is this Sunday. I sure hope Team Melf is gonna represent!
BTW: it’s my Monday at Fictionistas…where I ask the question: Who Are You?
