Oxford Recovery

If you haven’t seen my FB pics of the trip, click here.

The weekend was AMAZING. I don’t think anything could have made it better. Well, maybe winning the lottery, but even that would have just been extra whipped cream.

Jefe and I have great friends.

The first half of the game was slightly painful. I was sitting with the enemy–my people were just a section away, so it could have been worse. And my enemies were quite nice to me over all. Even when we were down 17-0.

The person who picked on me the most was my own sweet boyfriend. I believe the text message BOOM! Headshot! just as the announcer said OLE MISS 17; ARKANSAS: NOTHING.

But his tune changed by the time we made it back to the grove. Yes, I was all smiles.

It was a perfect weekend for football and friends.

ION, Rader P F will be shadowing my bestie Jenn Christman on Thursday. He’ll be on B98.5 from 7-8 a.m. then heading over to the Arkansas Democrat Gazette to do some Newsie work. I think they’ll be doing a food review that day too, so he’s all smiles about that. If you’re around, listen for my boy on the radio that morning!

My favorite things

Okay, so I haven’t done a fun “MY” list in a while. And since I feel like a million bucks and am very excited about going to Oxford with El Jefe this weekend, I thought I’d make today all about me.

Because, you know, it’s my blog. And it should be all about me.

Some of my favorite things:

1.  My tattoo: I waited til I was 40 to get my tattoo and I decided to go big or go home. I also wanted to make sure my tattoo meant something to me. If I’d gotten one when I was younger, it would have been something cheesy. I never wanted to regret my permanent ink. So I went with Gerber Daisies which are my favorite (especially the hot pink ones) and a honeybee (which is what Melissa means in Greek) and a dragonfly, which I think of as my totem.

 2.  Flamingos: partly because they are fabulously pink (Yes. I love pink. Sorry I’m such a cliche) and partly because I’m just enamored with them. Today I’m wearing my Swarkovski Flamingo pen that my kids got me for Mother’s Day several years ago.

3.  The smell of brand new, crisp, hot off the press, straight from the bank, money. No I do not print my own. But if I could, I’d roll around nekkid in it because that’s how I roll. hahahaha.

4.  Bath and Body Works fragrances Sensual Amber and Into the Wild.

5.  The 4-legged Family Members:

6.  Hammock time:

7. Girls night out with my good friends. I’m lucky and might even venture to say blessed with wonderful women in my life.

8.  El Jefe.

9.  Sock Monkeys. Nothing says happy like a sock monkey.

10.  Last but not least: My rotten boys. They crack me up every single day.

2011: Month of Mel Day 10 (and soon to be the Day of Ralph)

Look! Official proof I finished the half-marathon!

There are other pictures and even a video clip of me “running” across the finish line. Painful to watch. But hey, the goal was to finish…not finish with style. Hah!

Now onto the fun stuff! My friends Sara & Jim are somewhere in the ATL birfin’ a baby Ralphasaurus today! C’mon into the world, Ralph. There are loads of Aunties and Uncles who can’t wait to meet you!

I love sharing my month with very awesome people. And babies who are being born to awesome people. (who will naturally grow up to be awesome.)

Happy soon to be birthday, Ralph!

In other news, here’s what I’ve decided to give up for Lent:

Who’s with me?

2011: Month of Mel Day 8

It’s Fat Tuesday! Totally my favorite holiday. Let’s face it…any holiday with the word “Fat” in it is worthy of admiration, respect, and celebration! Also there are beads! and Feathers!

Friday night my friend Laura threw an impromptu Mardi Gras/pseudo Bday party for me since El Jefe was in town. And look! I ate the baby!

We also had a dance off in the play room where (as Jefe so kindly put it) Ellis schooled me. Whatever. I let her win. (or as Laura said, “We forgot to tell Ellis she had to let Mel win…) Hah! No respect. There are a few pics of the schooling on Jefe’s camera. I believe he thoroughly enjoyed watching me wiggle my booty. BTW, I did beat Ellis when IT’S RAINING MEN came on. I guess I just needed the proper inspiration. Hahaha

Feathers, Masks, Beads, and Wine! How can you go wrong???

And for my favorite photo of the evening:

Photobomb: El Jefe does it right. I swear it looks like he’s gonna eat our heads. heh

Had a great night with my friends and it served as a fabulous appetizer for the Day of Mel which is coming up next Monday…

Isn’t the Month of Mel the best month ever? Happy Fat Tuesday everyone! Go out and get your eat on!! Yay Gluttony!

a fangastic time was had by all!

My book signing for LOVE SUCKS! was yesterday. Check out my new fangtastic ring that my sweet friend Ell-Bell gave me. (She also is the one who gave me Count Smurfula. She is my favorite girl in the world)

The signing was a success. 65 copies of LOVE SUCKS! were sold, 12 copies of BITE ME! we sold out of BITE ME! but that didn’t stop people from ordering them! YAY!
I had several friends from high school come to support me. I’m truly blessed with wonderful people in my life.
I owe a huge thank you to Fishdog for designing my new bookmarks (which are wonderful) and taking care of all the printing for me. He also designed the table top sign for me.
Books-a-Million in North Little Rock is the best damn bookstore in the state. Pam Houk and Chris Barton and all the other awesome associates seriously rock my socks off. If you live in central Arkansas, you should be making all your book purchases from this store. Trust me. They are awesome.
I posted these pics at Fictionistas today, but I’m gonna repost here for your viewing pleasure.
The first pic is me and my rotten boys. The 2nd is me and some of my classmates.

I had the best day and the greatest weekend. I have surrounded myself with a fabulous circle of friends and am truly the luckiest girl in the world.

Let’s Groove Tonight

Antibiotic eyedrops AHOY! Lovin’ the fact that my eye doesn’t feel like a fat marshmallow anymore. SWEEEEET!

Last night was not our typical girls night out…we had our monthly Bunko game…the theme was Black Tie Bunko (which is funny, cuz my BFF Maria Geraci has a book called BUNCO BABES GONE WILD and they host a fundraiser called Black Tie Bunco…if you haven’t read it yet, SHAME ON YOU. Order it NOW!) Anyway, I wore black and white and had a black skull tie on…a couple of girls wore beautiful formal gowns. A couple wore suits. All in all it as a good time.

Tonight, I’m introducing my children to the legendary band EARTH, WIND AND FIRE. It’s gonna be awesome.

Dear 2009,

Don’t let the door hit you on your way out.

My friends and I were talking yesterday and we have decided that 2009 has been a year of either REALLY BIG HIGHS or REALLY BIG LOWS. There has been no in between. And dealing with both highs and lows with barely any time to catch our breath, we also decided that we’re exhausted.

So hasta la vista 2009.

I consider myself a very lucky girl. Even though we had a few scares over the year (a scary car accident with my niece and SIL and my BIL’s heart attack) my family remains healthy. And I’m very grateful for that. Several of my friends are struggling with illness in their lives and it breaks my heart for them. So knock on wood, we have our health.

I want to end this year on a positve note, so I think I’ll name all the good things that have happened to me over the year. If I focus on the good, the memories of the bad will fade into the distance.

  1. Wrote LOVE SUCKS!
  2. Won money at the horse races (not a lot, but hey, it paid for dinner and drinks!)
  3. Reconnected with some dear old friends and have rekindled some fantastic friendships that will last forever
  4. Got my awesome tattoo
  5. started working on a 40 things to do at 40 list and have accomplished many things on the list
  6. Ran my first 5K
  7. Celebrated the Month of Mel
  8. Turned 40 with style
  9. Went to two conferences, one in Florida and one in DC
  10. Spent some time at the beach
  11. Began to plot out a new series
  12. BUNCO BABES TELL ALL and BUNCO BABES GONE WILD both hit the stands
  13. CAN’T STAND THE HEAT also hit the stands
  14. oh yeah, and my debut novel BITE ME! finally made into the wild
  15. I found more than 100 four-leaf clovers over the summer
  16. Spent a weekend at Beaver Lake with my Thursday Girls.
  17. Got an email from CNBC’s Melissa Francis
  18. BITE ME! went into a 3rd printing
  19. After two years we finally sold our house in Oxford
  20. Saw Staind in concert!
  21. Did a local interview on a morning show
  22. Saw my ‘wee Scottish lad’ and his family in Nashville
  23. did the Race for the Cure
  24. Lost 35 pounds (and depending on the clothing) 2-3 sizes
  25. Had several successful book signings, an author talk, and visited the book club at my former high school

Looking at my list of good things that have happened this year (and I know I haven’t listed them all, but this is what came to mind this morning) I realize even with all the lows, 2009 wasn’t all that bad. Sure there have been some tough times, but I’m going to believe the good out weighs the bad.

The Universe wants me to know that 2010 is all mine. I thought I’d share that with you as well. The future’s so bright…I gotta wear shades.

Have you ever noticed how folks instinctively know that creating wealth is
much more fun than spending it, yet they dream more about spending it than they
do about creating it?Could it be, Melissa, they’ve momentarily forgotten that
they’re supernatural, that they can have whatever they want, and that life is
but a dream? 2010 is all yours, baby – The Universe
