1/12

Can you believe January is over? Crazy.

Which means we have 14 days to prepare for the Commercial Day of Love!

Okay, I don’t wanna be such a cynic. I really used to love Valentine’s Day…once upon a time. But when you wake up one day and realize the only good V-Days (and B-Days for that matter) you’ve ever had were because you planned them yourself and finally stopped hoping you’d get a lovely gift that took planning and forethought, then being cynical is understandable. (Pro-Tip for the guys: Kroger flowers are fine on a random Wednesday…but please, if you’re gonna go the flower route for V-Day, take a little care and buy from a florist…Okay? Or pick wildflowers…that’s even better…) (Oh and get her favorite flowers, or something original. Roses are lovely, but if you get them every year, you’re just being lazy.) /end unsolicited advice

These days I approach Valentine’s Day with a different eye. I actually receive a tremendous amount of joy in giving gifts…especially when it’s the “perfect” gift for the person.

Do you celebrate Valentine’s Day? If so…start planning now to give a great gift and you’ll enjoy it even more.

PS: You can never go wrong with something sparkly. 🙂

right brain v. left brain

I posted this years ago, and I still find it fascinating.

Which way is she spinning? Can you make her change directions?

The Right Brain vs Left Brain test … do you see the dancer turning clockwise or counter-clockwise? If clockwise, then you use more of the right side of the brain and vice versa.

Most of us would see the dancer turning counter-clockwise though you can try to focus and change the direction; see if you can do it.

Of course, my brain is different. She’s spinning clockwise. And I can make her change directions at will.

Today’s miscellaneous post was brought to you by the Right Brain. Be Creative and carry on!

Hey Mom…

“For your birthday, do you want to do another spa day…just me, you, and Rader?”

Best. Sons. Ever.

Speaking of birthdays, Rader turns 15 on Wednesday.

Yes, This Child…

WILL BE 15.

How lucky am I to be the mother of such a fantastic kid? (who will be driving soon? ACK!)

Pretty damn lucky.

I’ve done one thing right in my life, and it’s my two boys. Excuse me while I pat myself on the back for a moment.

Hi. my name is MELF and I’m pro-gun and pro-gun control. Let’s discuss…

Since I’m a “leftist-peace-loving-liberal-socialist-commie hippie” who is also pro-gun…I often get asked by my more conservative friends my opinion on the gun debate. I’m going to weigh in on my blog. And I welcome any discussion (here or on Facebook) as long as there is no name-calling and bashing of beliefs. I won’t tolerate it here. This is my little living room on the web and I would love to have a discussion, but it better be respectful.

I’m going to start this discussion by dispelling a rumor. There is NO evidence that Hitler said this and I’m sick to death of seeing this kind of propaganda floating all over the web. All this does is instill fear and loathing to the under-educated and misinformed.
What did Hitler actually do when he was in power? He loosened the gun laws for non-Jewish Germans with the 1938 German Weapons Act. At best, this quote is a made-up load of hogwash, pasted next to Adolf’s face to instill passion and fear. At worst, it’s paraphrased and taken way out of context to instill passion and fear. The very definition of Propaganda is the spreading of ideas, information, or rumor for the purpose of helping or injuring an institution, a cause, or a person. We, as Americans, are better than these tactics.

Here are some questions/statements that I’m constantly being asked to answer as a leftie…(these answers are mine and mine alone and do not represent the opinions of all my leftie friends.)

    1.  How can you be for “gun control” and be pro-gun? The 2nd amendment gives us the freedom and the right to bear arms.

The 2nd Amendment states: “A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.”  A WELL-REGULATED MILITIA.  Even the founding fathers believed in regulations. If the American government gets “too big” are you going to form your own army  attack the White House? I think that’s such a cop-out argument. We are so much more civilized than in colonial times. We are not a Theocracy or Dictatorship. We stop the government from getting “too big” by civilized methods as a MAJORITY, not as angry villagers chasing the Frankenstein Monster away because they feel threatened.

Look at the number of mass shootings from 1982-2012.

The assault-weapons ban existed for 10 years…1994-2004. During that time there were 246 people injured or killed by spree shooters.

When the ban was lifted, from 2005-2012 there were 448 people injured or killed by spree shooters.

Those numbers are why I believe we need stricter regulations on all guns, and that military-grade weaponry belong to military and law enforcement only.

      2. But my freedoms are being limited if you limit high-capacity mags.

I believe the right to bear arms does not mean military-grade weapons and I believe if the forefathers could see the future of weaponry, the amendment would read a little differently. If you’re going to be in a well-regulated militia, then fine, register your hicap mags and go.

I believe all guns should be registered when purchased. I also think there should be gun insurance. And if you’re going to have military-grade weapons, you should be willing to purchase the insurance to cover any incidents caused by your weapon.  We regulate booze. We regulate cars. If someone drinks and drives, they get severely fined. Their insurance rates increase or they lose their driving privileges all together. They go to jail if they kill someone. Stricter regulations may not be THE answer, but I do believe it is a start.

       3.  Bad guys are always going to find a way. Why should I give up my freedom as a law-abiding citizen because of the sins of few?

Good grief. This isn’t giving up a freedom, it’s regulating something so we can continue to exercise our freedom safely. No individual NEEDS a high-cap mag weapon…unless they’re hunting humans. Sure they’re fun to shoot. I mean, hell yeah! what a rush! However, I don’t want that shit in my house and nobody else should, either. I think weed should be legal and regulated and taxed. The same goes for prostitution. And why not high-mag weapons? Or all guns for that matter? Let’s require registration and insurance. Let’s require mandatory background checks. Let’s make sure that someone who has had mental stability issues can’t get a hold of a gun legally. Did you know that the weapons used in both the Sikh Temple shooting and the Aurora movie theater shootings would have been illegal to purchase during the assault weapons ban? Could the shooters still have obtained those weapons illegally? Probably. However, it would have been much more difficult. And who knows, maybe if the ban were still in place, those shootings wouldn’t have happened. Or maybe there would have been fewer injured or killed. And THAT is something I think we should all want.

I take exception  to the “law abiding citizen being punished for the sins of few” argument. All laws are based on the sins of few. Are child molesters in the majority? Rapists? Laws and regulations are in place to help us punish those who step outside the box of the law. And there are enough incidences with hi-mag weapons (and other weapons) that I think we’re to the point that we need stricter regs. Marrying a 14 year old used to be okay. It used to be if a rapist married his victim, then the rape didn’t happen. Women couldn’t vote once upon a time…  I think gun laws can evolve to our current level of civility.

      4.  You don’t need your wine anymore than I need my hi-cap mags.

I would argue I need my wine..haha. Okay, fine. I don’t NEED my wine. However, my wine isn’t going to put a bullet or 20 into the head of an innocent victim. And my wine is regulated and taxed.
If we had stricter regulations and punishments on guns when kids accidentally shoot the wall or their brother or take grandpa’s gun to school…LIKE we do if a kid drinks a parent’s booze and steals a car, or steals the booze and gives it to their friends, then we would see a significant drop in these issues.

      5. You have to be 21 and a non-felon to own a gun.

Yes. Unless you buy it from a gun show or a private citizen. Then it’s don’t ask, don’t tell. If I buy my kid booze, I get in big trouble for contributing to the delinquency of a minor. If you buy a gun from a private citizen and pay cash, no background check is done, no insurance or registration is required and it’s like that sale never happened.

      ETA:
BTW, Ronald Reagan agreed with me:

      May 3, 1994
To Members of the U.S. House of Representatives:

We are writing to urge your support for a ban on the domestic manufacture of military-style assault weapons. This is a matter of vital importance to the public safety. Although assualt weapons account for less than 1% of the guns in circulation, they account for nearly 10% of the guns traced to crime.
Every major law enforcement organization in America and dozens of leading labor, medical, religious, civil rights and civic groups support such a ban. Most importantly, poll after poll shows that the American public overwhelmingly support a ban on assault weapons. A 1993 CNN/USA Today/Gallup Poll found that 77% of Americans support a ban on the manufacture, sale, and possession of semi-automatic assault guns, such as the AK-47.
The 1989 import ban resulted in an impressive 40% drop in imported assault weapons traced to crime between 1989 and 1991, but the killing continues. Last year, a killer armed with two TEC9s killed eight people at a San Francisco law firm and wounded several others. During the past five years, more than 40 law enforcement officers have been killed or wounded in the line of duty by an assault weapon.
While we recognize that assault weapon legislation will not stop all assault weapon crime, statistics prove that we can dry up the supply of these guns, making them less accessible to criminals. We urge you to listen to the American public and to the law enforcement community and support a ban on the further manufacture of these weapons.
      Sincerely,
      Gerald R. Ford
      Jimmy Carter
      Ronald Reagan

Okay gang. I’m done for now. Heh. Just remember, if you decide to engage in a discussion, please be respectful of others. Nobody is right or wrong. It’s just opinion and this is not a black and white topic…

        It’s a rather blustery day…

Yep. Today the wind is windy and the temperature is dropping and there’s a chance of ice tonight. Every time the weatherman says something about a “light icing” I have dreams of cream cheese frosting. It’s just the sugar withdrawals, I’m sure…

Still, I’m wearing my sassy pants again today. I do love it when I wake full of awesome and sparkle. A friend of mine sent me this picture this morning and you know what? I feel so fabulous, I would have smashed this box twice.

I’m heading to the gym at lunch again today. I’ve decided working out at lunchtime is really ideal for me. And it saves me gas money. I bring my lunch, go do my workout, come back and eat. So I’m getting more awesome AND saving cash. If I get any smarter, you’re all gonna be in trouble.

Hope you’re wearing your sassy pants and sparkle today! Life is better with glitter…

        Workout Wednesday…

My days of Wine Wednesdays are gone for now. Do I miss them? Well, sure! I miss hanging with my girls on Wednesdays the most…however, I’m really enjoying my workouts, too. And I love the way my body is responding to regaining its fitness.

Yesterday, I added five 30 second sprints throughout my 30 minute run. I read that adding sprints to your runs will actually help you burn an additional 200 calories. It also increases your endurance without increasing your workout time. Since I’m working 7 days a week and it’s still getting dark too early, I can’t do my once-a-week long endurance walk/run. So I have to try to increase my endurance in the shortest amount of time possible.

I’m super-stoked about doing the 1/2 Marathon again.

I was a little disappointed to discover that recording my abdominal workouts on myfitnesspal.com doesn’t actually give me credit for additional calories burned. Hmph. I think if I do 200+ crunches a night, I’m burning some damn calories.

OH! And I think my elbow is healed enough that I can start BootyCamp again! I’m graduating myself from Beginner BootyCamp to Big Girl BootyCamp! I’m stoked. I just have to use light weights in the beginning so as not to re-injure my arm.

This weekend, we finally got a chance to start moving the storm debris down to the burn pile. Them was some heavy branches, let me just tell ya. We tried to move the branches in the front yard with the tractor, but they wouldn’t budge. Next up…a chainsaw.

This tree in the backyard is probably going to have to be completely removed. Sigh. It was such a pretty tree…

What’s going on in your world? Any fun news? Anyone really that concerned that Beyonce lip-synced at the Inauguration? no? Me either. This is NOT news, people, nor is it important.

Oh yeah: My Bachelor Recap is up at Hey Don’t Judge Me.…Go read the crazy and fill your eyes with Shirtless Sean…

        I’ll take it!

So this morning, I was given the best compliment ever. I was told I look like Scarlett Johansson from the Avengers. Now, do I believe that? No. Will I ride the waves of awesome from that compliment? HELL YES.

OK, I scanned the internetwebs to see if I could find some remotely normal (as in not sexified hot) pics of Scarlett to make a comparison.

Hmmmm. Well, we both have red hair and a nice rack…but that’s about it. However, I’ll take it. I’ll take it and run…NO TAKE BACKS!

Since today is pretty awesome I’m gonna share some Weird, random, and ultimately unimportant things about me that will help you from confusing me with Scarlett Johansson. (Cuz you know it’s been really hard up until today)

        • I’m a Pisces (Scarlett is a Scorpio…which means she and I would get along well.)
        • I misspell Pisces every time I type it.
        • I don’t like ‘old’ movies. Or musicals (with the exception of two or three)
        • I read my first romance novel when I was 13. (Kathleen Woodiwiss)
        • I don’t eat shredded coconut because it tastes like grass.
        • If it comes between chocolate or lemon dessert…it’s lemon every time.
        • The cotton in Aspirin bottles makes me cringe. As does velour.
        • I’ve seen Cinderella & Ozzy at least 5 times in concert.
        • For the longest time, I wanted to have a little girl and name her Mandolin Rain. Yes. After the song. Yes. There’s a reason I only had boys…
        • I love the smell of leather and new money.
        • Other than my engagment/wedding rings, I’ve only received 1 other piece of jewelry as a gift in my entire life.
        • I love getting flowers on random days,  but not if that’s all I get for holidays/special occasions. (I think that’s lazy and shows lack of interest). I’d rather get daisies or sunflowers than roses.
        • I like big butts and I cannot lie.
        • Flamingos are my favorite animal.
        • I love sock monkeys.
        • I dream of owning a bar on a beach and living in an apartment above it.
        • I wanted to be a soap star when I was in high school.
        • My first fishing pole was a Snoopy rod-n-reel. My daddy says I threw it into the lake the moment I got my first bite. I say it was Nessie who wrenched the pole from my death grip.
        • My first nickname was French Fry.
        • My first kiss was the summer between 6th and 7th grade on a raft in the middle of the lake.
        • I once made out for hours with my boyfriend in the sheep barn at the Arkansas State Fair.
        • In college, a group of friends and I climbed Pinnacle Mountain after dark. We were on our way down when suddenly we heard ‘HIKERS! COME DOWN FROM THE MOUNTAIN.’ We had been cold busted by park control. Luckily no one got a ticket.
        • I have a crush on Steve from Blue’s Clues.

So now there is NO WAY you would possibly confuse me with Scarlett Johansson… You’re welcome.

Hope you guys have a fantastic weekend. I will be working and playing. And of course, smiling and sparkling. Because that’s what you do when you’re awesome….

        sassitude

Yeah. I’m wearing my sassy pants today. And they look GOOD  on me, too.

I love it when I wake feeling sassy. There’s nothing like living your life in color, ya know? And since I’m determined to make 2013 my bitch, I’m in living color every day. (Every day I’m not down with the flu that is. heh)

The LR 1/2 Marathon is about 6 weeks away! I’m really looking forward to it, even though I’ll be worn-smooth-out when it’s over. I am gonna be wearing my Funky Tights and a smile. And possibly a tiara–because, why wouldn’t I? I’m down 10 lbs since the beginning of the year and have hopes to be down another 10 by the marathon.  Go TEAM MELF!

Rader and I had a great dinner last night. We were talking about school and his future and where he might want to go to college. He surprised me when he told me he plans to get a full scholarship to UCLA. Now, don’t get me wrong, I have no doubt that boy can get a full scholarship anywhere he chooses…I was just really surprised to hear he wants to Left Coast it.

It fits him, though. Completely. He’s my little hippie. He’s very much like his momma. Peace, love and laughter seems to be his life’s motto and California would definitely suit him.

My monkey boy. He’s trying to grow up right in front of me.

        good grief!

Just when I thought I was feeling better, Lucy would pull the football out from under me again.

        Damn you, Lucy!

But, after a weekend of only working 3.5 hours each day and sleeping damn near the rest of the time…I can finally say, I feel better.

        Sparkly, even!

Thank goodness. Because last week was the most unfun I’ve had in a long time and I hope we do not have a repeat anytime soon…

January…what a bleh month. We’re getting some freezing rain today, possibly some snow. Probably not gonna be anything like what we had over the holidays, but still…I don’t like being at work when the stuff starts falling. Let’s hope it just blows on through.

It was 75 degrees on Saturday…and it’s 25 degrees right now. Arkansas! There is nothing predictable about our weather!

Oaklawn opened Friday…and for the first time in forever, I wasn’t there. So sad. The girls will be planning a day soon, and I can’t wait. I do love my days at the races with my crew.

Speaking of my crew…damn I miss everyone. What a weird past couple of months I’ve had. I’m working on weekends now, so I’m exhausted by the time I finish with work and can’t make it to the PartyHood. I haven’t made it to Girl’s Night Out since early November, and that feels weird. Jefe and I haven’t been able to go out in forever either…I’m kind of ready to get back to the social aspect of my life…when I can fit it in, that is.

Rader’s birthday is at the end of this month, and he sent his father an I an email with his wishlist. His note said :

I included price, html, and name of item(s). You’re Welcome. Fishdog and I were joking this morning that this was the equivalent to our days of marking pages and items in the Sears Catalog. (which is how I got my awesome Barbie Country Camper, back in the day.)

Hope everyone had a great weekend and that your week is starting off with a sparkle!
